This trade talk is confusing me... some are saying we want Kobe and others are saying we want Arenas, I am all about getting a good center. Lets make up our minds! Do we want another guard forward or center...which we be most important in the Spurs championship formula? Just reply to this thread saying if we need a guard, forward or center.

it seems you still haven;t realized than on Pop's system the 4 and the 5 change as much as the 1 and the 2... so Tim is our "pseudo" center... dig it... :devil

One of the possible reasons for why the Spurs have not repeated has been player turnover. It takes even a good player with a high basketball IQ about a year to learn the Spurs' sytems (particularly the defensive rotations). Oberto is probably the poster boy for this phenomenon. IMHO, Oberto will begin his decline phase any day now, but this will be offset by gaining experience with the team and league. I think Oberto will improve during this contract and plateau about the time it expires.

Oberto really needs to: 1) set picks; 2) funnel people into Duncan on defense; 3) move well without the ball to facilitate Duncan (like clearing the lane when necessary); 4) rebound; 5) score when wide open or on put-backs; and 6) not turn the ball over. Oberto does all of this better than anyone the Spurs have had since Robinson. Is his game pretty or stylish? No, not at all, but the Spurs don't need that from their second big (or anyone, for that matter). I wish he was a little more confident on offense, but he has shown major improvement. Also, I loved how he was able to step up his game for each round of the playoffs last season.

Oberto has always been adored by his teammates and management as a guy who will run through a wall to win, then hold up the wall while the rest of his teammates go through. I have heard Manu say many times that Oberto is always the most well-liked member of every team on which he has played. While popularity isn't necessarily the best barometer for basketball skill, Oberto is not a guy who could be easily replaced, particularly with two years of learning the Spurs' systems.

To answer your question, I don't think the Spurs need an "upgrade" anywhere to repeat. When you are already the best team in the league, tampering with the roster tends to hurt more than it helps, at least short-term. Long-term, something had to be done about Bowen, if only to help prolong his career. The Spurs may have addressed this with Udoka. Time will tell...

It's partially true perhaps, and they made a few decisions that may have impacted their success, however, the Spurs were really just one play away from moving on in 2005-06, and not the Mavs.

Oberto adds so much to the flow of the offense for the Spurs and once he learned how to defend the screen/rolls later in the season, last year, he was invaluable.

Actually, I don't think this was a major reason either. In 2004, adjusting to the loss of Robinson may have been a factor. People who watched the Spurs more closely than I did four years ago are more qualified to judge.

I do think making wholesale changes is always a bad idea, especially for a team that relies on depth and experience. (In other words, most championship teams.)

I would second that, and add only that said ball-hogging head case also has a max contract.

These decisions do not occur in a vacuum. Parker and Ginobili have very reasonable contracts. I'd much rather have both than any one player in the league right now.

Agreed. Get over it mate, we don't need a centre. We have a three-headed monster in Oberto/Elson/Horry that will do the job just fine. Those three guys allow us to go scrappy, fast, or smart with range, and that's all we need from our second big.
