LONGHORNS MEN'S BASKETBALL

Talent abounds, but uncertainty is top factor so far
Longhorns need to resolve roster issues to win.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As coaches steer the top Big 12 men's basketball teams toward opening day, uncertainty nudges hope in the front seat.

If the league's coaches are correct, the top four teams are Kansas, Texas, Texas A&M and Kansas State.

In the meantime, the Longhorns have liked the work of Alexis Wangmene, a 6-foot-7 freshman post player from Cameroon who played at Central Catholic in San Antonio and Blair Academy in New Jersey.

"He's a monster on defense and rebounding and blocking shots," Texas point guard D.J. Augustin said.

Guard A.J. Abrams said, "He even takes charges — in practice. That's kind of unheard of."

No wonder Barnes is confident the Longhorns will improve on defense, a weakness last season.

"That's all we do in practice," Abrams said.
