Spurs vs. Warriors
PREGAME
The Spurs once again go into a preseason game without any of their usual point guards. Tony Parker, Jacque Vaughn and Beno Udrih are all listed as "will not play" for tonight's meeting with the Golden State Warriors.
Udrih, who has a fracture of his left index finger, was out on the court running before the game. They're not even listing an injury for Parker now -- so there doesn't seem to be any worry around the team about having Parker ready to play for the season. Vaughn has a strained right calf.
Manu Ginobili and Michael Finley are listed as the starting guards for the Spurs.

FIRST QUARTER: LINEUP SHUFFLE
The Spurs went with a younger starting lineup than usual. New Spurs Darius Washington and Ime Udoka got the start at guard and small forward, respectively. Manu Ginobili started at the other guard. Frabricio Oberto and Francisco Elson started together at the big spots.
Tim Duncan and Brent Barry were among those in street clothes on the bench. Gregg Popovich was also not on the bench in the first quarter, even though he was on the floor an hour before gametime talking to Warriors coach Don Nelson. Instead, Popovich was watching from the stands while Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer was calling plays from the sidelines.

Unless Pop has really gone soft and is going to give Beno's undeserving ass one more chance.I don't think it's safe to say that Washington has made the team. Beno for some reason has nine lives with the Spurs. He's on life number five or six right now.
Even though Washington is basically the same age as Marcus Williams and obviously the better player, the Spurs used a second rounder on Williams so he might be kept instead.
I think Washington is still a longshot to make the team. The Spurs would have to believe in him enough to either eat Beno's contract or cut a player they drafted at the beginning of the second round.
If it were up to me, I'd keep him because I don't really think Williams has the talent or Beno has the heart to be NBA players.

If it comes down to keeping 2 out of 3 of them, you have to keep d-wash and williams. No doubt about it as far as I'm concerned. Beno has absolutely no future with the spurs... elsewhere? Perhaps. But none with the Spurs. Wash and WIll are both young and unlike Beno their future here hasn't been pissed away yet.
Eat Beno's contract, he doesn't deserve another minute as a member of the current NBA champs... Give the young guns a chance...

My question to you....
What do you think Pop thinks about Beno's comments?
You yourself knows Pop loves AJ...and you yourself also know that when AJ got cancerous at the end of his Spurs career...Pop ran him.
You think Beno will be exempt?
See, I can't see Pop looking past that.
I think the reason the Spurs haven't moved him yet, is simply they didn't have a 3rd string PG...I do think Vassilis was a consideration...and I definitely think Pop likes what he's seen from Washington more...
Plus, Washington is kind of a guy that you pull for...
Yeah he choked, at the very end of that game, and that's a scary thought about having him on your team...at the same time...he was in so much pain over it, that you just want to see him given a chance to erase that...plus, as a back pg, if he's in at the end of a must win game...we probably aren't winning that game.
It's seldom that I'll endorse a proven choker...those guys scare me worse than any other type player, but when they are in that much pain over it...they deserve a chance for redemption.

That Washington is back in the picture at all is a huge testament to his fortitude. The guy's been through more basketball-induced misery than most players see in a lifetime. He choked against Louisville in a vital game, then bounced back to lead his team to a great season the next year. Then he declared for the draft, foolishly hired an agent, and wasn't drafted. Those are things that can break a player.
Instead, he's taken a year in Greece and fought his way back, and there's little doubt he'll be around the league for some time, even if at the end of benches. But is there any reason not to think he'll have a Jacques Vaughn-type career? I'm pretty impressed so far.
Cut Beno. He's not going to do anything this year. If you can't get a fifth round pick for him, cut him. He is what's called in the business world a 'sunk cost'. Just let it go... especially when keeping him winds up costing something worthwhile. Simply having a gutsy guy at the end of the bench, instead of a fat slob, can pay dividends.

This is the thing that really impresses me about him. Not his skills (which he obviously must have some to put together a stat line like that), his toughness.
He freakin LED us last night. Repeat: LED. He out toughed a Warriors team that was playing some starters down the stretch. A close game and he took control and guided us to a win. He wanted the ball and hit the clutch FTs to seal it. WHEN has Beno ever done that at any point in any game he has ever stepped out there to play in? When has he ever shown toughness like this?
Pop is a sucker for mentally tough and hard working PGs. IF this guy is showing this daily in practice and continues to show toughness and leadership in pre-season, Pop will have a hard time letting a guy go when he has the thing he looks for most in a 3rd string PG. Hungry, tough, hard working. The anti-Beno.

I been reading up on the kid, and like someone pointed out, he only turns 22 this year, he has all the tools to be one of the better defenders at the guard spot in the league, hes not the tallest at 6'1" in shoes but he has the body to not be bullied around and the quickness to stay with the smaller points.
I will be shocked if we DONT sign him at least to a couple of 10 dayers.

IF this guy is showing this daily in practice and continues to show toughness and leadership in pre-season, Pop will have a hard time letting a guy go when he has the thing he looks for most in a 3rd string PG. Hungry, tough, hard working. The anti-Beno.
It may be less a question of whether or not Pop is impressed (I'm betting he probably has been) and more about whether RC is willing to cough up the extra cash it would take to sign Darius if they can't trade Beno.

^ Drop in the bucket. How much could the guy possibly make? At the price they are selling at the ATTC, sell about 2 more hotdogs and 1 more order of nachos per game and you've covered his salary.

I'm not quite sure that would add up to $1.7 million -- but I didn't buy nachos the last game I attended.

the prices at ATT, are cheaper compared to US Airways Arena, CHase Field, and University of Phoenix Stadium here in the desert.
