While deciding which brands of clothing to include in her Cielo boutique, Yardley Bowen took into account factors such as her own personal tastes and cost effectiveness for potential clients.

One thing she didn't take into account, at least when it came to selecting the actual clothing, was the opinion of her husband, Spurs forward Bruce Bowen.

“He loves that I'm doing something that I love,” Yardley said, “but he didn't really know a lot about fashion up until I showed more of an interest with the boutique.”

Cielo, located at the corner of Bitters Road and Huebner Road in the Valencia Village de Inwood shopping center, opened on Sept. 24, and features clothing lines such as Tracy Reese and 12th Street by Cynthia Vincent.

Yardley said the clothes would start at $50, though she insists the 2,200-square-foot boutique will not have the uptight feel of some department stores.

“We want people to have fun when they come in here,” she said. “There's no stuffiness. It's very welcoming, and we want people to come in and find the pieces they're looking for.”

As for which fashionable pieces will be featured at Cielo, Yardley drew on her Miami upbringing.

“Growing up in South Beach, hanging out with my friends, going out and with the nightlife we have over there, you're forced to go shopping,” Yardley said.

She is hoping to bring that chic, big-city feel to San Antonio.

“San Antonio is a huge city, but it has that whole small-town mentality,” she said. “New things are good, but you have to bring people along slower because a lot of things going on in different cities haven't taken place here. San Antonio is growing, and we want to be a part of that.”

Yardley isn't stopping with the opening of Cielo.

She also plans to open Yardley's Salon and Spa in November. The salon also will be housed in the same shopping center, a 30,000-square-foot facility — owned by the Bowens — that is home to businesses such as WineStyles and Anytime Fitness.

In the meantime, Yardley is focusing her efforts on getting Cielo up and running. That includes soliciting input from the boutique's clientele.

“We want clients to give us feedback,” she said. “I want them to tell me what they like and don't like, what they've seen and what's cool. We're open to new and fresh ideas.”

While Yardley focuses on her newest business venture, Bruce and his teammates will take to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 30, when the Spurs open the season against Portland.

“I think you can expect the same things that (fans) have been getting for the past few years,” Yardley said of the Spurs' hopes of repeating as NBA champions. “They're a great team, and they function well together ..... I think they're championship caliber.”
