Unless you get up at the crack of dawn to stand in line, forget about the Sears Tower. The line is ridiculously long. The boat tours are nice. The food is fantastic, from the hot dogs at any street vendor (I prefered Weiner Circle) to the bistros and high-end dining.

Even if you don't like to shop, I would recommend the Miracle Mile which is a portion of Michigan Ave. It is awesome and always somethign to do. Of course last time I went I got steamrolled by a theif running out of one of the stores, but overall I still had fun :lol

Loved the Christmas Tree from around the world exhibit when I was a kid....but I wouldn't think they have that right now since it is only Oct. Does anyone know if they still have that exhibit?

Go to the Billy Goat Tavern on Lower Wacker drive. I've lived in this area most of my life, and I gotta say, they have some of the best damn burgers EVER.

Go to the art museum, I think wed or thursday are free for students. The place is amazing, and so huge that I only had enough time to check out a third of it.

I used to live there. If your going to go out try going out in Lincoln Park or Wrigleyville. It's much more fun up there than it is in the stuffy bars in the Loop. My favorite bar there is Aliveone on Haltsted and Diversey. Wrigleyville is like going back to college for a weekend.

But I would go to Michigan Ave. and Rush St. if your into shopping (they are connected)

Also the Art Museum has 2 very notable paintings, firsth American Gothic, and second the painitng that The Club uses for the banner

Another thing, Giridanos is the stuffed pizza everyone talks about, however if you want the best pizza it's at The Red Ivy right down the street from Wrigley Field.

Get a Vienna Chicago Hot Dog

Oh, Gee!!

everyones already mentioned the beefs...hells yeah! have one and youre not likely to eat anything else the entire time. i promise when you get home your have a jones for one within a week. the museums are FRIGGIN HUGE and totally worth an entire days walking. i was lucky enough to go with a family that forced me to do the "educational" thing. otherwise im sure i would have wasted my time in malls and such. hit as many as you can!! and dont forget to take a pic by the "married with children" fountain. it by cabrini greens. (sp?) thats a fun place too..:) jk, dont go to the greens.

Take some time to get out of the loop and north michigan so you get a sense of what the city is really about. Get out in the neighborhoods and find some good bars; you might even go beyond the yuppie neighborhoods and check out something the locals would do.

Have good food. As others have said, have some vienna beef products and some pizza. Have some goose island beer - my favorite is honker's ale - and tour the brewery while you're at it. Go off the beaten path up to devon street and have some indian food if you're into that.

If you want to go in a big building, try big john instead of the sears tower. you can take an architectural cruise on the river, and that's pretty cool, considering that Chicago probably has the finest skyline in the nation and some of the most interesting architecture.

The garfield conservatory is cool. Wrigley field is worth checking out. Comiskey park or the joan or whatever it is they call it today would give you a chance to visit the south side.

Explore. Enjoy. Have fun.

Lou Malnati's pizza. It's a must for any tourist.

Eat, eat, and eat some more. Chicago is the best city in the country for food, IMHO.

do you know what small bar is?

been there, but only to start the night...not to finish it.

Pizza - Giordano's
don't bother trying too many other places (unless you really wanna experiment), and make sure you get to deep-dish stuffed pie because their thin crust really isn't that good. - other options: Gino's East, and Chi-town pizza in the Gold Coast (very good thin crust), Piece.

Hot dogs - ANY small location with the "vienna beef" sign in the window, otherwise it's not a Chicago dog IMO (you might be able to find some in River North if you're in that area). Even if you don't like the works that they put it (pickle spear, tomato slice, tiny sport peppers, etc.) just give it a shot, it's worth it. Don't ask for ketchup as these places do not have it...this is not just a chicago thing, no one should ever do put that on a hot dog - other options: Portillo's (not nearly as good, but it's a fun place.)

Sears Tower -or- Hancock Center
Hancock Center, no contest.

Museum - John Shedd Aquarium
Others are fun, too, but this one seemed to be the most fun to visit. It has plenty of sea life and other creatures that you might not have ever seen before. The other museums are good, too, it's just that they sometimes have exhibits that have no interest to you, or just could get boring after a while. -other options: Adler Planetarium, Science and Industry.

Most bars will stay open until 4am, but not a lot of the good ones.
People (cabs, buses, general crazies) drive like maniacs, be careful crossing streets.
Ride the train if you get a chance, just to experience it in all its shittiness.
