Anyone been to Lost Maples?

I think thats the name. I remember hearing about this place a long time ago when they ran a story about it on the news. I know its a park in the hill country somewhere but I don't know where lol I just remember it looking really pretty and being highly recommended. Anyone know where it is and when is the best time of year to go there? I don't know if any foliage would be showing up yet. My roommate and I have been wanting to take a much needed break from work and I thought it would be cool to drive out there and maybe eat bbque somewhere too. Any recommendations?

I've not been in the fall, but i have been there before and I liked it a lot. My understanding is that in the fall it gets SUPER crowded so go in the week if you can to avoid the huge crowds. I liked it there.

Yeah, during fall color, they have a line outside the park. One car comes out, they let one in. It's a nice park with trails that range from a stroll to a workout bordering on climbing. The maple trees are ice age survivors that exist in only one other box canyon near the border with New Mexico.

Go during the week and you'll be OK. The leaves can be spectacular and are worth the trip if you get the timing right.

It's a primitive park. There are some picnic areas up front but the rest of it is all trails and primitive camping. If you want a 'traditional' state park you can go just down the road to Garner, which is also crowded on weekends (but not as bad this time of year). You won't get the leaves at Garner but the scenery is spectacular.

Back when I tried to get the Club to have a camping GTG I had looked around for some cool spots. I found out you need to book a spot at least a month ahead. Some parks have no dog. and some no beer. If you want to sleep in your car or outside I think they have certain rules now. It's not like in my day when you could park anywhere and just throw a blanket on the ground, and have unprotected sex. those where the days...
Anyway make sue you call first and reserve a spot if you plan to sleep over.

Lost Maples is in Vanderpool about 13 miles north of Utopia on RR 187 North. Its a beautiful area...really good hiking trails.
