Mavs adding Juwan Howard, releasing DJ Mbenga

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Mavericks picked up some much-needed frontline help by agreeing to terms with free agent Juwan Howard today. The contract can’t be completed until Howard clears waivers tomorrow

Howard (6-9, 253) hit the open market after Minnesota bought out his contract and should join the Mavs on the season-opening two-game road trip, perhaps as early as Wednesday night at Cleveland. The power forward has averaged 16.1 points and 7.1 rebounds over his 12-year career, including a stint in Dallas over parts of two season (2000-01 and ’01-02).

“Juwan was too big of an opportunity to pass up,” president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson told mavs.com. “Juwan is a winner, he’s a leader and he knows the Maverick way.

“He can swing from the ‘4’ to ‘5,’ so it gives us tremendous flexibility on the frontline.”

Howard should join the rotation immediately backing up Gana Diop and Dirk Nowitzki up front. The Mavs were in need of help down low, especially with Erick Dampier out. Brandon Bass was the only other healthy big man with NBA experience on the roster.

The team made room for Howard by releasing four-year center DJ Mbenga, who recently returned from a knee injury. Mbenga (7-0, 240) played three seasons in Dallas and holds careeraverages of 1.3 points and 0.9 rebounds in 79 games.

Mbenga played in 21 games last season before suffering a torn right ACL on Feb. 7. His only action of the preseason was in the finale against Chicago. Mbenga recorded five rebounds, two blocked shots and an assist in 12 minutes of action.

“DJ needs an opportunity to play and develop,” Nelson said. “We appreciate everything he’s done for us and he’s been a big part of our success. We’re hopeful that with playing time, whether it’s in the NBA or Europe, he’ll be able to join our team in the future.”

This just upped the anti in the Spurs vs. Mavs games. Howard is hated in San Antonio. He's the only player I've ever heard Pop call out in a news conference for being dirty.

This would make beating the Mavs that much sweeter.

Good addition for the Mavs ... let's hope there's some chemistry issues. And why would he play the 4 when you have Dirk? Pshh, make him your starting center ...

Juwan Howard a winner? A leader?

At Michigan they never won despite having 5 future NBA players. Then they were found to have cheated and had all their records erased by the NCAA.

In 11 NBA seasons, only played 13 playoff games. 3 games back in the day at Washington (beat in first round). 10 games for Dallas, vicious hit in 2001 on Derek Anderson, they lost to the Spurs 4-1.

Yeah that's some winner and leader record right there.

What the hell is the Maverick way? Throwing a cheap shot and then getting run out of the playoffs prematurely?

I'll say this much for Juwan Howard. He's probably the only person in the world with the ability to make Spurs fans think of DA with sympathy for even a second.

So you're saying that Horry is a dirty player because of his hit on Nash? You have to look at a player's entire career. Horry has never been a dirty player, but Howard has consistently delivered cheap shots when he loses his temper. I think that is why Dallas picked him up - because they need an "enforcer" who will play dirty and make the hard foul...

Oh no the sky is falling, oh no, oh no - the eternal optimism of the Mavs fans is so laughable!

i really don't care what the mavs do all season. they have so much to prove. if they don't have the highest score with 0:00 is showing in the last game of the finals they'll forever be that team that almost did.....................nothing. they'll just contribute to "global warming" 'til that -never- happens. i say they have a blow up by all-star break.

Who was dirty on the Spurs in 2000-01?
