Sorry if already posted, but I just read that the 2nd round pick from MIN in the Beno trade will be conveyed only if the Wolves finish with one of the four top records in the NBA this season. Translation: no pick. :lol

Is this a 2008 2nd rounder?

I'm pretty sure they owe the Pistons their 2nd rounder already for the Ronald Dupree trade a couple of years back.....maybe I'm mistaken.

they owe the pistons either their '08 2nd round pick or their '09 2nd round pick. not sure if this trade ensure the pistons get the '09 pick, or if they still get the '08 pick if the protections hold up (which they will).

Thanks for the details. I didn't realize they had an option to make it 2009.

Top 56 protected, i think we get that pick. I cant see the Wolves finishing with better than a fourth-worst record in the league. I rekon we will get that pick :) take a flyer and get the next Manu

I've heard of draft picks in trades being position-protected, but usually that means if the position isn't right, the pick is deferred to a later draft.

Is this a case where, if Minny's pick is in the top 56, the Spurs never get any compensation?

"Top 56 protected"

That ranks up there with "best 56-game record in sports history".

Seems like this must mean that we'd get the pick for this year then. :clap

Does anybody know if we got a TE from Minnesota in the deal? Has that been released? And what's the deal with those? They can only be used if you're under the salary cap right?

still a fantastic trade.

Even if the Spurs received only a bag of magic beans, it was still a fantastic trade.

Sorry... what does "Top 56 protected" mean? Protected for who?

Does it mean that the wolves don't need to do it if the pick is within the top 56?

Or is it a protection of the spurs, meaning they only want the pick if it they get to choose at the 56th position in the worst case scenario?

A top 56 protected pick means that if the pick falls in the top 56, it is protected so that the Spurs dont get that pick.

If it falls below 56 then its the Spurs pick :D

Sorry... what does "Top 56 protected" mean?Basically it means that Beno was traded for nothing.

And getting nothing was actually better than expected.

that's a worthless pick then!! There's only ONE Manu Ginobili!

Actually, it was Beno and cash for nothing. Spurs made the trade to get rid of Beno and not have to have his guaranteed money on the payroll affecting the cap/tax threshholds.

My question is...

What was in this for Minnesota?

The +/- $2M in cash we sent them to save 2x as much in cap savings.

We traded Beno for some room for Mahinmi and Washington. Sounds like a good deal to me.

True, it isn't like teams were knocking the walls in looking to trade for Beno. Good deal

lets just say we sent them 3 mil (which is the max iirc) along with beno. the wolves then buy-out benos deal at the full amount (for the sake of argument). so after the buy-out, the wolves are at +1.3 mil. id say the wolves arent going to turn down free money.

for the spurs. they send out beno plus the 3 mil. now they save the 1.7 mil of benos salary, the ~1.3 mil it was costing them in luxury tax, and now get to receive a portion of the luxury tax reimbursement that is given to all teams below the tax line (somewhere around 2 mil). so the spurs end up at +2 mil, give or take.

its a financial move on both sides, with both teams winning.

Money. The Spurs probably sent them the entirety of Beno's salary, so buying him out for less netted them $$.

Sounds like the Spurs are going to throw every game they have against Minny this year.

I missed the part where the Spurs paid Minny to take Beno.

I missed the part where the Spurs paid Minny to take Beno.Minny accepted only under the condition that they didn't have to keep him.

Beno will now go on to an illustrious career as the backup point guard for some team in Kyrgystan.

Square deal
The Timberwolves trade for San Antonio guard Beno Udrih, giving up a conditional second-round pick and taking on Udrih's $1.7 million salary, and then immediately cut him. And we know what you were thinking: another harebrained deal by Kevin McHale.

Hardly. The transaction helped out both teams. The Spurs, up against the luxury-tax threshold, were faced with a doubling of Udrih's cost to them ($1.7 million in salary, $1.7 million in tax). So they sent Udrih to Minnesota, which had room under the tax threshold, along with the money to pay the disappointing point guard's salary and an extra $500,000 for the Wolves' trouble.

Because cash is king in Minnesota these days, the Wolves grabbed it. Especially because the pick they promised only goes if the Wolves finish with one of the top four records in the league (right!). Otherwise, the pick gets "conveyed'' into the future and eventually forgotten.
