Doctors at Chicago's Loyola University Medical Center introduced the world's smallest surviving baby Tuesday, a child born weighing just 8.6 ounces.

Rumaisa Rahman was born Sept. 19 as was her fraternal twin sister to a Hanover Park, Ill., woman and weighed 1.3 ounces less than the previous smallest surviving baby, Madeline Mann, the Chicago Tribune reported. Mann, also born at the Maywood medical facility, now is 15 and attends high school in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Loyola's Stritch School of Medicine Pediatrics Professor Jonathan Muraskas said studies suggest Rumaisa, who now weighs nearly 3 pounds, will develop normally.

She and sister Hiba were born by Caesarean section and underwent operations and months of treatment. Doctors said they hope both girls can be home with their parents, natives of India, by early next year.

But how can this be? It's only an unviable tissue mass, after all...:rolleyes
