Sonics are my 2nd favorite team right now. They've got Presti and Carelismo, and they took Durant away from Texas (so he didn't play A&M for more than one year; I know he would have killed us if he developed more while in college). :D Oh, and the whiners & thugs from 2005 are gone. Go Sonics!

I'm baffled by two statements that Doug Collins just made. At the last timeout, in talking about the Suns, he characterized them as "talented," which I don't dispute, and "deep." A few moments later, when Amare picked up his 3rd foul, he immediately said that the Suns weren't that deep on the frontline. It would seem to me that if you are a "deep" team, you have backcourt and frontcourt depth. If the Suns don't have good frontcourt depth -- I'm fairly certain that they don't -- I have no idea how they can be considered a deep team.

To that end, one thing that has killed the Suns the last couple of years has been a lack of depth -- or at least D'Antoni's refusal to use whatever depth he has (see Game 5 of 2007 WCSF). They added Grant Hill, Brian Skinner, and two rookies, while subtracting Kurt Thomas, so I wonder where this great depth is.

I think Suns are notoriously slow starters. Didn't they start 1-5 last year and something bad like that the two years before?

Really nice first half for the Sonics as they embark on whatever last-ditch effort there might be to keep the team in Seattle; it does seem that the fans want that more than Sonics' ownership. But I'd think that if they can play an exciting brand of basketball and bring folks out to see them play, they might figure out some way to keep the NBA working in Seattle.

The Suns were a top-10 defense in the league last year, based off of all the stats I saw (defensive efficiency, opponents' FG%, point differential). They weren't a top-tier team like San Antonio, but their defense wasn't terrible like some people claim.

They have trouble against teams like San Antonio and Utah, not because their defense is horrible--they have trouble because none of the players in their rotation are big enough to defend a Tim Duncan or a Carlos Boozer. Physically, Duncan and Boozer are too much for Amare to handle alone.

As the season progresses, their defense will improve.

Wow, I didn't think the Sonics would look this good.

I feel bad for Stoudemire. He seems so alone on the inside, and the Sonics defense is doing a number on the Suns' frontcourt.

I don't know if it's the Sonics overall defense or sloppy Suns offense that's working the magic here. But the Baby Sonics do have a little hastiness in their offense that I am sure P.J. will work out.

I think the Amare's suspension built up Thomas's contribution. If not for that, K Thomas would not mean much in the minds of most Spur fans.

He's gonna score 25-30 a game this year easily tho. Jeff Green's a player. And Wilcox is a beast! I've been saying he was a 20-10 waiting to happen since his early days in LA. Petro looks good for them too, looks like he's bulked up quite a bit

Sonics need to work on following through with their shot. A lot of shots blown that should've gone in. But the team is so young, most of their errors are due to juvenility. Seattle deserves to keep them and see their future after the crap they've had to go through before.

Well if Grant Hill is going to sit out behind the three point line and launch long range bombs all game, he doesn't have to worry about getting hit too much since he's attacking the basket once or twice a game. Shit, play him 48 minutes a game if all D'Antoni is going to do is have him be a spot up three point shooter. 7 3-pt attempts for a guy who's never had that kind of range?

:tu I agree that Hill should only play 30 minutes at most. I don't know what all these Spurs fans are crowing about. Spurs barely beat Memphis and Portland, which are two crappy teams and let them shoot a better percentage than we let the Sonics shoot tonight. I think the Suns can play defense, just wish they would do it consistently. I also think we had first game rust, so I'm glad we kept at it and won. Anyone notice that Nash had seven rebounds? Honestly it was horrible defense. Seattle missed a bunch of easy ones, mainly due to the fact they're so young and the rookies aren't used to playing back to backs. It is game 1 though so it's way too early to say the Suns defense will suck all year. I'm sure there are a lot of details to work out and improvements to be made, but looking at their team the only two players on that team that play defense are Marion and Bell. Being that none of them are bigs I don't really see their defense improving that much at all. If Duncan stays healthy I see him having a field day in the post everytime.

I don't think Seattle missed that many easy shots. They were hitting alot of contested jumpers in the first half. If anything, its Seattle's defense which was poor. The Suns scored 106 points despite 20 turnovers and poor three point shooting. How many wide open threes did Hill and Bell miss? The Suns won this game with some solid fourth quarter defense.

ya i noticed that too. D'Antonio probably told Hill if you dont shoot at least 5 3's a game you gonna sit on the bench. They need to use Hills slashing ability to give the offense a different look, instead of hanging out in the corner as a spot up 3pt shooter.

Suns have no plans on playing defense once again. They will never learn. Then end result won't change either. Just run up and down the floor. Score as fast as you can. No championship for them in sight! D'antoni needs to go. What an idiot.

LMAO @ this thread.....Didn't the Grizz just put up 101 on a Championship team the other night.

I guess the Spurs just don't play good defense anymore.

The Suns held the Sonics to 41.5% shooting which is A LOT lower than what the Spurs were able to keep the Blazers or Grizzlies to (47% and 50% respectively).

The Suns biggest problem last night was rebounding.

If you look at the stats only, then you are correct. If you watch the games you will see how the teams scored their points. I watched the first half and saw layups, dunks and other easy baskets by both teams. That just does not happen to teams like the Spurs. Pop will not allow it. I did not see the Memphis game but I am quite sure the Spurs did not allow that, did they?

Well you just admitted that you didn't watch the second half where the Suns held the Sonics to 43 points or the Memphis game where Memphis was able to get almost any shot they wanted the entire game....so your opinion is pretty useless.

My observation was that Spurs fans were foolish for laughing at the Suns' poor defense when the numbers show the Suns played better defense than the Spurs played in any of their first two games.

Time will not tell if this observation is true. I can tell you right now, for a fact, that the Suns played better defense in their opener than the Spurs did in either of their first two games. :lol

Spurs were playing a back to back against a better team than the Sonics.
The Suns d was pretty shitty throughout. They were lucky to win that game. And the Spurs are averaging 99 points against them right now, the same amout that the Sonics scored, so I dont know where this obvious proof they played better d was.

Way to prove a point that the Suns can have better defensive stats through 1 game than the Spurs have through 2. Yea, superior d :lol

Reading comprehension still obviously eludes you.

I didn't say the Suns were a better defensive team...I was laughing at Spurs fans for taking shots at the Suns D when so far, the Spurs D has been worse.

99 points to a team led by a rookie and Chris Wilcox. Yea, thats a incredible defense.

The Spurs are on pace to win twice as many games as the Suns right now, thats your logic right? :lol

Right. But we KNOW what the Spurs defensive ceiling is. Suns have yet to prove they can play defense for the entire game. They had some nice spurts on defense against the Spurs, rather fans want to admit it or not...but after that game last night it doesn't look like they are any more serious about D this year. But like you said it is the first game so these takes don't mean much.

Seriously, I can't think of another team in the NBA with less capability to have interior defense than the Suns. Not one. Sacramento is close but not close enough.

No numbers will tell anyone that this Suns team is anything different than what we've seen in the past few years. Same old, same old shit. It's fun and exciting to watch, but its crap at it's core and once again won't get them any further than before. All I saw was that D'Antoni thinks Grant Hill is some 3-pt ace when he's never been and that the Suns can be had as they have before. Nash does his thing, Stoudemire and Marion theirs. But there hasn't been some miraculous revolution in Phoenix. You'd have to remove D'Antoni's coaching mindset to accomplish that.

Suns have no plans on playing defense once again. They will never learn. Then end result won't change either. Just run up and down the floor. Score as fast as you can. No championship for them in sight! D'antoni needs to go. What an idiot.

Okay whatever you say. I guess holding the Sonics to 41 percent shooting and 99 points is poor defense.

There's no getting around it--their first half defense was extremely poor. No one could stay in front of their man, Durant was having a field day, Wilcox was having a field day, etc.

But the defense really tightened in the 2nd half, particularly in the 4th quarter.

Offensive rebounds. Offensive rebounds. Offensive Rebounds.

If I could write one thing on the Suns chalkboard, I would write "One and done".

Your hate for the Suns is getting quite sickening to read.

Fact is say what you want but the Suns will be a big threat to the spurs in the playoffs. They got to 2-2 against us for a reason. Suns could of grabbed that game 5 in their house without amare and Diaw....if they did who knows the suns may of been the defending champs.

granted they aren't but fact is the suns are a tough team and will be tough again.

(Using Spursdynasty logic...)

99 points is 1 point away from 100, so they basically gave up 100 points, and when you give up 100 points, that is bad defense, since the Spurs almost never give up 100 points. The fact that you didn't give up more than 100 is a fluke, and Kevin Durant missed a couple shots that he normally would have made. So if you add those shots in to the 100 points already scored, they probably would have lost by about 3. So really, the Suns are 0-1.

That comment wasn't something I was argueing It's all of his points throughout this thread.

It's crazy to see so much garbage being posted by spurs fans when it concerns the Suns. Obviously no one should be scared of Phx but you have to realise the spurs will be in a dogfight if they are to get past the suns.

They might have the worst interior defense in the league, thats not hate, its true. Maybe you didnt watch Chris Wilcox looking like Elton Brand, but it doesnt mean it didnt happen. They lost their only big man defender in Thomas. Be a sympathizer if you like, but dont get butt hurt from someone pointing out a glaring deficiency in their roster.

Why did you even bring up last year anyway? That had nothing to do with the comment about this years team. Diaw and Amare got themselves suspended, stop making excuses. Secret Sun fan maybe? Hmmm.......

I understand and agree completely. Suns are not a team to be taken lightly. But for teams that play basketball the right way, as long as they keep doing that (playing the right way) they will eventually win the series.

If you actually read what I said I stated his comment on the Suns interior wasn't something I was arguing. It is the non stop hate of the Suns making them sound like a lottery team.

Fact is this the Suns are a great team and if the spurs and suns meet in the playoffs again It can go either way. Spurs will be favourites but It wouldn't be a huge shock if the suns win.

... and if Elliott hadn't hit the corner three against Portland the Blazers may have gone on to win the title. And if Kerr hadn't stepped up Dallas may have been the NBA champions. And if Horry hadn't hit the three Detroit may have been the champion. How does that change the fact that the Suns are the worst interior defensive team in the NBA which historically has been a pretty significant flaw in running the guantlet to a title. If I was a Suns' fan I'd see that as pretty shitty odds.
