SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs announced today that forward Tim Duncan has signed a multi-year contract extension. Per club policy terms of the contract were not announced.

“Tim Duncan has established himself as one of the best players in NBA history,” said Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich. “Despite the individual accolades he has attained what makes him truly great is his dedication to his team. He is the ultimate teammate. He is an unselfish superstar who loves to compete and has only one goal when he steps on the court – to do whatever it takes to help his team win.”

The 31-year-old Duncan has captured the NBA’s MVP Award two times (2002 and 2003) and has earned NBA Finals MVP honors three times (1999, 2003, 2005). He is the only player in NBA history to be named to both an All-NBA Team and an All-Defensive Team in each of his first 10 seasons. The 1998 Rookie of the Year, Duncan has been an NBA All-Star nine times and has been named the NBA Player of the Week 18 times over the course of his career.

In 746 regular season games Duncan has averaged 21.8 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.47 blocks in 37.5 minutes. Among active players he ranks ninth in points (with 16,288), fourth in rebounds (8,866) and fourth in blocks (1,840). Duncan has appeared in 138 playoff games, averaging 23.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.75 blocks in 40.1 minutes in the postseason. In postseason action, among active players, he ranks second in playoff points (with 3,282), second in rebounds (1,728) and second in blocks (380).

“This is an exciting day for all of us in the Spurs family,” said Spurs owner Peter Holt. “We are all grateful to Tim Duncan for the leadership and dedication he has shown to the Spurs franchise. He has had a tremendous impact in our community – for his efforts on and off the court – and I’m thrilled that he’ll spend his entire career as a San Antonio Spur.”
