with the spurs drafting Splitter, resigning bonner, what are the chances of bringing in javtokas? i heard his recovery from the surgery went pretty well, and he retained most of his athletecism, but i know the spurs are deep @ that position.. and what position is Mahimni supposed to play here? he seems a little skinny for a PF.. i thought he was supposed to be on the roster this year also, what happened?

Ian Mahinmi is on the roster this year. He is at the end of the bigs rotation but has looked alright in limited minutes so far. Mahinmi certainly needs to get bigger in order to be a complete player, but he appears to be athletic enough to play PF.

As for Javtokas, there is clearly no role for him on this team right now.

Considering Javtokas' age and the lack of need by the Spurs at his position I kind of came to the conclusion that he will never be in the league. We could trade him to another team, but I doubt anybody else is really all that interested. His chance was last year. We made him an offer, he just wanted too much.

There was extensive discussion about bringing over Javtokas before we signed Butler last pre-season.

He is an athlete, and a dunking machine, but little else from what I can tell. He's not made a huge impression in Europe. With the big man depth here, I doubt he'll ever get the call up. He's signed until mid-2009 with Dynamo Moscow.

I think this is in someone's sig, but I think it applies especially to Javtokas.

Sometimes you have to consider the possibility that the purpose of your life is to serve as a warning to others.

The Spurs can be like family, if you put the team first and work with them. If you don't, faggedaboudit, you're out of the family.

Thompson, I believe this should help illustrate your point. :lol

Javtokas salary is $1.5M per year according to Lithuanian's newspapers. To me, it seems quite high for this kind of players but why not.
A nba team must offer him a half MLE contract if he isn't ready to take a paycut to play in nba. I don't see Spurs ready to spend that much on him.

Upon further review, Javtokas still has no discernable basketball skills other than jumping and dunking, and will never play in the NBA.

ive never been able to see him in game, but considering pops track record when it comes to him and the other scouts evaluating talent, im sure there is something there to warrant him wanting to draft him.. i wish he woulddnt have pulled the jay williams, and we might have been able to see him develop into an NBA star.. some foreigners on another site i post at say he played like a european Amare before the injury, and ive seen some of the dunks.. shame

He wanted too much money.

If Javtokas would take the minimum or thereabouts and the Spurs had an open spot in the bigman rotation, maybe. Still, it's rather unlikely he ever joins the Spurs.

There was plenty of reason to draft him back in 2001. Six years ago, he was a 21-year-old athletic freak with seemingly unlimited upside. Then, he got into the accident, and while he recovered well enough to play again, he never showed much interest in developing basketball skills, but he did show interest in getting paid a salary totally disproportional with his track record. His potential has ended up unrealized. That ship has sailed. He will never play in the NBA, much less for the Spurs.

Mahinmi isn't that skinny for a PF.
Spurs have send in France one of their physical trainer (Chris Sullivan) to work with him during the whole last year. This physical trainer will be in Austin this year and will continue to work with him.
Mahinmi has too worked a lot this summer and has gained 10lbs of muscles.

He great at dunk but very lazy and uncare. he scrub player almost for Panathinaikos. He player like Stromile Swift all ability no IQ no care.

He can be great player if coach able motiviate. But if coach Obradovic one of best coach in world not able motivate him not think Popovich can either. Panathinaikos gives up on him from his lack of care. :depressed

The Spurs drafted Splitter and have Ian on the roster now, so there's no longer any room for the dead weight that would be Javtokas.

Saw him play a couple of times, not a big fan. Poor offensive abilities

Just watched the Sacto game where Mahinmi got a long garbage run, and i have to say he looked great! Lively on offence, and on D he had that big block, and then next play down held his position well in forcing a miss out of Abdur-Rahim (who used to be a force in the post, once upon a time).

Can't wait to see him with another 25lbs and 2 years of NBA experience, I think he'll be a very solid big man.

No room at the inn for Javtokas. We're loaded at that position. He's probably stuck in Euroland forever.

Ian looked pretty good against the Kings but I'm in agreement that he needs another 20+ lbs to be more effective. Wonder when he will be sent to the Toros for PT/development? When do they start playing?

The Toros start their season right after Thanksgiving. His debut here might be delayed because of the injury to Horry.
