2. Item: The San Antonio Spurs signed All-NBA forward Tim Duncan to a two-year extension, collected their third championship rings in five years and got off to a 2-0 start without any issue.

What this really means: While so many teams go through highs and lows with players running off at the mouth, underachieving or having any number of excuses for not winnin, Duncan and the Spurs just keep rolling. They're nothing fancy, but have every attribute necessary for a return trip to the Finals.

This may be the year the Dallas Mavericks put it together, or maybe the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns or Utah Jazz will come barreling through to knock off the Spurs. But if Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili avoid injury, they'll be knocking on the door again. And while Gregg Popovich is obviously a superstar coach, he became a special coach because he had Duncan and David Robinson to build around. Duncan's unwavering approach to life and basketball gives the franchise a foundation that makes them a likely winner every time on the floor.

Not that a two-year, $40 million extension is a vast underpayment, it's just reasonable, which really puts into perspective why Duncan is such a consistent player. In this day and age, for a superstar to be reasonable makes him special.
