Maggots are actually very good at keeping open wounds from getting infected. They are a biosponge for pus, "infection", and secrete enzymes that break down all sorts of bacteria - which they then ingest.

In an age where many microbes have built resistance against anti-biotics like penicillin some doctors have gone back to maggot therapy methods which were being perfected during World War II.

I've seen them put maggots in open, infected wounds on purpose because they eat off of the infected, dead flesh.

Gross.

Pfft. Sissy.

All maggots are not created equal, either. You have to pick the right species of fly maggot for the debridement, otherwise they can eat the healthy flesh.

Any medical specialty is disgusting in it's own right if you think about it.

And a lot of foot problems could be avoided if diabetics would check their feet daily, but they don't and end up losing a toe, partial foot, or even their leg.

(Nerd warning) The thing is, old diabetics, they usually can't see the bottom of their feet and they've lost most of the feeling... they have a lot of problems with it. I was a home health aide for a while and did a lot of foot care. With the poor circulation, a little knick can turn into a wound that won't heal. Sad, really.

Okay, nerd hat off. Sorry for derailing a funny thread. :)

This is true, sadly.

However, he'll them to come back in a few weeks and they don't and when they finally do, it's usually too late.

Like yesterday, he told his patient that he needed to admit her to the hospital. She told him that she needed to pray about it. I guess God told her to get her ass to the hospital as she's having surgery tomorrow. :lol
