That jump seemed abnormal, either Manu used Yao as a boost or jumped while in the air, because it looked like he reached his peak height on the jump and then he just elevated a little bit more.

Manu is exploding off the court perhaps better than ever. I can't remember the last time he looked this fresh with such freedom of movement.

I'm hoping he can still have 90% of this explosiveness come playoff time.

I've only seen that kind of a jump... reaching a peak then seemingly elevating higher, one other time. David Thompson of the Denver Nuggets slamming over Kareem in 1977.

That dunk was awesome and Manu was to. I know we lost, but does anyone care? It's just a loss at the beginning of the season. It does not seem signficant at all. I know they can win when it really matters. And the ball won't always bounce the other team's way like it did tonight.

Most of Manu's other great dunks were one-handed. To throw down a two-handed dunk over a human that large you have to really get up. Off the top of my head, that's the highest I've ever seen Manu jump.

First off Manu is shorter than T-Mac and his arms are not as long either. And he dunked off two feet which definitely harder to dunk than one foot in which T-mac did.

Again; Nope he dunked off one foot

StoneBuddha
11-07-2007, 03:23 AM
I think the dunk looks *a lot* better too because he was dunking over Yao. Slow footed and huge adds to the the posterization effect. Plus, the dunk came out of no where.

On a side note, doesn't Yao look like he's dunking on one of those 8 foot rims. He put some down in traffic today but they don't look like much.

I knocked over my beer on that one.

Upon further review, his head was almost on the rim. It didn't appear that he got any lift from Yao, he actually banged into him at a pretty even level bodywise on the dunk. Those were the best hops Manu has ever shown in the NBA, and probably the best hops by a 6'6" "white" guy in history.

Actually, his left knee was riding him and catapulted him, which made him appear to get higher than he actually was.

Barry is top three for worst dunk champions of all time, and that's only because of Cedric Ceballos and Dee Brown.

It's all marketing. Manu's dunk is easily ten times the dunk Lebron made against the Spurs last year, but ESPN won't show it a thousand times and characterize it as a "facial".

Again, the dunk was ok (good dunk, not a great one). The main part was his elevation (IMO). However, Yao was already standing under the lane (after he threw the ball away) and didn't really try to contest the shot. It was a nice one but I have seen Manu do beter (I recall one against Wallace). I have definately seen better dunks on Yao...a good 10 a season or so (he has NO VERTICAL).

Don't even compare the 2. LeBron's head was on the rim, plus he dunked on arguably the best player in the league and a great shot blocker.

Yao is 7'6" and gets blocked by players that are 5'6".

Um, Duncan didn't jump and was out of position, so he just stood there with his hands in the air while a guy two inches shorter than he is threw it down with a full head of steam. Manu dunked from both feet on a guy a foot taller than he is who jumped to block the shot and fouled him in the process.

I agree that the two dunks shouldn't be compared because Manu's was much better.

Duncan was there in plenty of time. He knew he wasn't jumping with LeBron, or he would have gotten posterized even worse than he already had.

Fact remains: Yao got blocked by a player 5'6"; is slow, unathletic and a bad defender. LeBron posterized Duncan. LeBron: the easy winner. Thanks.

let's check it out :

"easy winner" : YAO.

Manu dunked on a SUPERIOR shot blocker.

I also never knew Manu could jump that high off both feet most of his dunks are off one foot.

gg @ casual fan

By your theory, Shawn Bradley is a better shot-blocker than the following players:

Hakeem Olajuwon
Bill Russell
Dikembe Mutombo

The better shot blocker will get more shots block per game.

Reading people's minds and putting in "would haves" is lame. Let me make this simple for you, as you have obviously never played basketball and are easily dazzled by ESPN highlights:

Dunking when you have a 44" vertical and a head of steam on a guy 3 inches taller than you who doesn't jump = easy.

Dunking on a guy 13 inches taller than you who jumps and hits you in the face when you have two steps and jump off both feet = difficult.

You do realize that even if Yao doesn't jump his hands go ten inches higher than Duncan's do, right?

Yao is listed at having a 20 inch vertical. He actually was listed at 24 inch vertical but claims foot injuries screwed it up a bit. Don't ask me to post link cause im too fucking lazy to search for it right now.

I don't know Yao's actual vertical. My point was even though he is 7'6, there are clearly some dudes much shorter that can clearly outjump the difference in height. This is why he gets dunked on say every other game....

Yao jumped up, and can't jump as high as Manu (which is obvious, watch the replay again). He is already standing under the basket. Manu is coming at him with a full head of steam and jumped towards the goal. Yao did not jump towards him...he just jumped up. And again, Manu clearly can get up higher than Yao can even though Yao is clearly taller.

If you put Yao and Duncan side by side and say jump Duncan will get up higher than Yao. This is one of the reasons Yao rarely wins a jumpball...one of the reasons he gets dunked on so much in a league full of athletic cats that can jump. When it comes to jumping/blocking dunks his height isn't that much of an advantage because I would say 60% of the league can get up higher than he can.

I don't have to put in "would have". It's a fact: Duncan did not try to block the shot because he would have gotten posterized. He cannot jump with LeBron, especially with the kind of authority he was going to the hole with on that particular drive. He knew he couldn't jump with him, that's why he didn't. I saw Vince Carter do the same thing to him. He tries to block Kobe and gets dunked on by him sometimes. Why does he try to block Kobe? Because Kobe has no hops and he has a great chance to block him.

Dunking when you have a 44" vertical and a head of steam on a guy 3 inches taller than you who doesn't jump = easy.

He makes it look easy, that's the idea. That's why it's impressive.

Dunking on a guy 13 inches taller than you who jumps and hits you in the face when you have two steps and jump off both feet = difficult.

Again, he's slow-footed, isn't a shotblocker and just flat out isn't a good defender. Size means little-to-nothing when you get 6'11" and above. It's about shot blocking ability, which Yao has little of.

You do realize that even if Yao doesn't jump his hands go ten inches higher than Duncan's do, right?

You do realize Yao is a bad defender and isn't a shot blocker, right?

Beyond all of that, Manu puts his left leg into Yao to catapult himself up. Not nearly as impressive as the LeBron dunk. I think the number of highlights shown of that dunk last season confirm that.

You mean after he put his left leg into Yao to catapult himself? I saw him try to dunk 2 hands the very next game and he barely was able to dunk the ball. It wasn't even a dunk really. It was more like a 2-handed lay-in.

I was being sarcastic, and I don't think the dunk itself was spectacular.

The total play was very good, the steal and finishing with a dunk. But the dunk was not Amazing.
