In December Surprise, Education Dept. to Issue Policy That Could Remove 90,000 Students From Aid Rolls

From the Chronicle of Higher Education (PS: you have to have a subscription to get the entire article): http://chronicle.com/free/2004/12/2004122201n.htm

About 90,000 students could be disqualified from receiving Pell Grants and other forms of federal and state financial aid under a change, scheduled to be issued on Thursday by the U.S. Education Department, in the formula the government uses to calculate a student's need for aid.

The department plans to announce in the Federal Register that it is, for the first time in a decade, updating the amount it forgives most families for their state and local tax payments when determining how much income the families have left over to pay college costs.

A U.S. senator from one of those states had choice words for the formula change. "I am outraged that the Bush administration is going forward with these punitive cuts in Pell Grants," said Sen. Jon S. Corzine, the New Jersey Democrat who led an effort in the Senate to block the department from making the formula change.

"For these students who are simply working to get ahead," said Mr. Corzine, "this is a scene from 'The Grinch who stole my education.'"

NO big "surprise"; Kerry said bush was cutting Pell grants in the debates.

W called Kerry a liar.

And yet again, we know who the liar really is.

I really don't want to have to sell myself or patent cold fusion to pay for school - nor do I want to take out so many loans that I'm paralyzed come graduation.

Whats with the mentality that we don't need to make it as easy as possible to educate our population?

Hey, fine, lets not do that. Let's let our workforce fall behind everyone esle.

I'm going to finish my education with or without financial aid (and to this point it's been without) but I want you to understand what this means.

I want you to take a drive down Fredricksburg Road across from USAA around 5pm.

That is why we must help people go to school.

as easy as possible at the expense of who???

and yes, i've seen all the indians on fred road.. it is because some american manager got smart and realized he could pay an indian less money on a work visa to do the job than some american who bitches and moans all the time about his work. i'll trade happy workforce and higher profits for bitching employees and lower profits anyday!

It's called instilling self-sufficiency and giving a student a sense of accountability for thier own education. What's with the mentalilty that everything should be easy to attain?

Hey, fine, lets not do that. Let's let our workforce fall behind everyone esle.
Flash: We're already behind due to preferential hiring practices, affirmative action, social promotion in school, racial quotas in colleges, and on and on and on. Let's start letting the cream rise to the top...how 'bout that?

I'm going to finish my education with or without financial aid (and to this point it's been without) but I want you to understand what this means.
Goody for you...

Why is that due to a lack of Pell Grants?

For all those who get their higher education with no federal money or help from mommy and daddy I salute you. But there are others who need the Pell grant and I salute them as well for attempting to better themselves.

Does the "No Child Left Behind" stop at Pell grants? I know some think that these are "hand outs" and there are students who look down on those who are attending college due to Pell grants or other low income scholarships.

I salute all those who are attending an institution of higher learning regardless of their means of paying for it.

But I am against any cuts in the the Pell grant program. If we can spend billions in Iraq we damn well better be able the fund for this important program.

I'm Joe Chalupa and I have approved this post.

The haters of GW BUSH think he is retarded, an idiot, a puppet, etc.. Basically everything....BUT they give him credit for every single thing.. so now OUTSOURCING is a GW BUSH invention! crazy! if you think outsourcing has only been around for the past 4-5 years then maybe you can qualify for some of the remaining pell grant money and get an education.

goodie for those that are able to goto school with no help from anyone.

most schools tuition alone doesnt allow you to attend classes without some form of financial aid, and there is a limitation on the amount of loans you can recieve.

ya lets discourage young people from recieving a college education because there is no money for school. and then we fall further behind everyone else.

smart.

and dubya is a liar in many ways.

I can't believe I'm going to do this, but I'm going to defend this Bush proposal. The proposal is actually to slash and take money away from pell grants from the richer states such as California and New York to leave more money for the poorer less educated states. Those are the states that will be dramatically effected. However, I don't think that Texas will fall under the rich state category. Most notebly San Antonio.

We just have to see to see how it's going to work.

Does anyone have any information on how students in other countries pay for higher education? What about Japan - whose students generally kick our butts in the Math and Science disciplines? Do they have financial aid like Pell Grants? It would be interesting to find out how they pay for their education as opposed to the system here in the United States.

I think some people have a real need for help - but I also think we have such a "welfare state" mentality that we think the government needs to help us in everything!

My daughter graduated from Reagan High School two years ago - she had a 97 gpa and scored a 1285 on her SAT's - yet she couldn't get a single scholarship! But there were others in her class who had "connections" and were able to get thousands of dollars in scholarship money - and they had parents who were wealthy enough to pay for school without them. Seems unfair doesn't it?

from what i understand many europeans barely pay anything for their higher education... i am not 100%, but that is what i've heard. they also pay a shitload of taxes as well.

however, it may be the reason why we have many foreign students attending college in the u.s.

and i am sick and tired of this "u.s. sucks at math at science" if we are so dumb then why are we the most powerful nation economically and militarily.

Cland, because power doesn't equate education.

Education does not compare to welfare for the fact that it is an improvement on the person making them more adept at being able to form a functional career.

I'm guessing that the number of college graduates on welfare is much smaller than the number of non graduates.

With all the ridiculous spending our government does, I would think that more people would think funding higher education is truely an investment that pays HUGE dividends for a society.

Thats a link to a government study...

There are countries that are beating us, and we're not at the top of any catagory. That's no big deal really, and if you look at the last 2 tables, it shows a trend in improvement.

But that's only up to the 8th grade level, which is why this info is shaky. I'll look for more.

BTW Cland, using your logic we should be #1 in every catagory, no?

Clandestino

well, you don't become the most powerful nation economically and militarily by being uneducated...

but i do agree, we should spend more on education...i think mainly at the earlier levels though... then the students won't trying to be playing catch up when they are in college.

but my point is, if you want a college education you will find a way to pay for it. complaining about not having the money is a cop out.
