Air purifiers????

Looking for some Advice on this.

My niece will be staying with us for a couple of months and she has Asthma.
I know Dusting, vacuuming, etc.. regularly is a must, however im looking to add
one of those air purifiers to her bedroom as an extra precaution.
I don't know what Brand/model would be the best buy, since they ALL claim to be the best.
Can anyone advise or make recommendations
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I use a Honeywell 5000 series (http://www.allergytech.com/images/honwel50250lrg.jpg)...They work great & make a pleasant white noise sound that puts me to sleep...
Costco, Home-Depot, etc carries them...They make smaller units now that are a bit quieter...

I have two of these. They've run pretty much continuously for about two years now without any problems, and they are AWESOME at what they do. For a while I had a neighbor in my apartment building that smoked like a chimney - it was a really strong, not-quite-right even for tobacco smoke odor, so I got two specially configured to remove tobacco/smoke and also have 24 pounds of activated carbon in each for odor removal.

For a bedroom, the 5000 HEPA or the 5000 Exec models would probably work. They also have smart, capable product reps you can talk to on the phone who were very helpful to me and can actually answer questions.

Be prepared: they are expensive. But with Air Purifies you get what you pay for. There are a couple other companies that make high performance filters like this - the kind hospitals will use. They are:

IQAir (http://www.iqair.us/) - Generally considered the best, but also the most expensive of the group when I was looking.
Blueair (http://www.blueair.com/) - These are the most stylish and also the quietest.
Austin Air Systems (http://www.austinair.com/) - Very good as well.

Oddly enough I found that most of the time you can actually find better prices buying through dealers/distributers than by buying directly from the manufacturer.

Here's another dealer that did some testing. Unfortunately it looks like they didn't include/don't carry the AllerAir models. Since Consumer Reports basically stops at the Sharper Image price point (which means they don't rank all the filters that actually work like they're supposed to) it's hard to find information you can consider reasonably complete and unbiased when you're comparing models. Same topic, but a bit off to the side - another asthma trigger one might not think of is scented candles. Or even air sprays like Febreze. We were amazed when the doctor told us that.

funny you should ask. i'm in the market for one as well. i looked at this site http://www.air-purifier-power.com/top-10-air-purifiers.html and read several reviews. i will have to buy two, maybe three, so price is a concern. i'm sure the top ranked purifiers are well worth what they're priced at, but i'm working with a smaller budget so i'm looking at this one http://www.air-purifier-power.com/neoair-68108.html. it scored very well, has a 6(?) level filtration system, low maintenance costs, is VERY quiet and is a fraction of the cost of the big boys. i'm probably going to buy two if not three of these very soon. good luck and let me know what you get and how well it works.

We purchased the Honeywell True HEPA Air Purifier Model 50250
and it works like a dream.
You can actually tell the air quality difference when you go into the room its in.
And its just amazing at removing odors.
after a month of use, I highly recommend it

We had some sort of electrostatic air purification unit installed directly into our AC system at our old house. It cost us about 500-700 dollars and that came with filters for the first year and then the filters cost about $45/year thereafter. It worked really well. The filters are 3 month filters and are white but when you change them out they are black. Totally disgusting. I can't remember the name of the system off the top of my head though.
