How bad can a formula to test impact and perfomance be when a guy who DIDNT hit a single FG shot, had 3 TO, no assists, no steals and only 2 points

Battier @ http://www.nba.com/games/20071111/HOUCHA/boxscore.html

has almost the same performance % than Manu today against the Bucks???

+/- just measures how well the team did when that player was in the game, it doesn't necessarily mean that one player made all the difference

You don't have to hit a shot to impact a game.

You failed to mention that Battier had 10 rbds and 2 BS, does that explain it better?

Battier is an above average defender. If you lock down one of the opposing team's first options, you can effect the plus/minus without logging a single stat on the box score.

It's also sometime inaccurate on one game, but at the end of a season, it adds prety well.

Do you forget Bowen of our own ? There's a reason Spurs fans -mostly- love him while having a meager stats to boot.

Thats a really misleading stat. Different players are matched up agianst different players... some may play the majority of their minutes against the second team vice versa... its still good to have it their though, i like it

So like in hockey it's the points scored by your team while you were on the floor minus the points the opposing team scored while you were on the floor? Or am I missing something?

You also have to be careful -- if two players tend to play together, one player may be riding the coattails of the other in terms of plus/minus. On the other hand, the whole point of this stat is that it is supposed to give some insight into the contributions that a player is making that aren't being captured anywhere else on the score sheet, so whose to say what's riding the coattails and what's making important but invisible contributions?
