Jeff McDonald: What happened to Bonner
Strange moment in the fourth quarter of the Spurs' 113-88 victory over Milwaukee tonight. Spurs forward Matt Bonner was out on the wing, in the flow of his team's offense, when he suddenly and inexplicably bent over in obvious pain.

What happened?

Apparently, Milwaukee's Royal Ivey sucker-punched him. Or, at the very least, shoved him.

Bonner says Ivey hit him so hard in the sternum so hard, it knocked the wind out of him. It seemed on odd place for Bonner to take a hit, considering he was about 28 feet from the basket and was no threat to score.

"I don't know why he did it," Bonner said.

Not long after Bonner was hurt, officials called an unrelated foul under the basket, allowing Bonner to catch his breath. He didn't even have to leave the game.

It could have been worse. The way Bonner was hunched over, it appeared he got hit in a much, much more sensitive area than he actually did.

I guarantee Ivey doesn't try that if Bonner still had his beard.

He should seriously get that checked out. Blows to the chest like that are quite dangerous, as evidenced by Oberto last year (sent him into an arrythmia). Unfortunately, team doctors nor Oberto paid much attention to it until Oberto complained of fatigue. Hope Bonner is okay.

Ok I seen it and it looks like the guy just put his hand out and he ran into it, from the video that's what it looks likes.

If that's the case Bonner is weak.

So thoughts?

Looks like Ivey could have hit him with the "heel" of the hand. If he was holding his arm up with any strength, that would do it.

It doesn't look like Bonner ran into the punch. He was running along side of Ivey for a split second after making contact. If he was hit in the groin, I could see that case. You know, the delayed reaction. But when the wind get's knocked outta you, that's a pretty intense hit. It was more than likely a cheap shot, one of the lighter ones if you ask me. I don't mind those cheap shots so much.

It looks like Ivey was trying to slow Bonner down because he was in the process of losing his man and getting open at the arc. Just a bit of a freak hit IMO.

LMAO Nobody on either side cares that Matt Bonner is "hurting", but I like this one better:

:lol I love the way he just starts walking away, like he knows that KG is gonna come after him.

I'd say that's a pretty accurate conclusion. It hard to tell with no close up of the incident. Royal doesn't seem like he fits in the Raja Bell catagory of "DIRTY PLAYERS" :spin

Thanks for the video post.

Look at the stone-faced killah face by bonner. Good thing they held KG back.

For KG's safety.

Look at the video. Bonner was at the FT line extended when it happened. 18 feet at the most from the basket.

Bonners mid-range game doesn't really pose a threat either. But I guess I need to watch it again, because it looked like that he got on the right wing near or behind teh 3pt line.
