I've been waiting for a movie about Edgar Allan Poe for years.
This looks promising.

Cinema Blend reports that Sylvester Stallone recently met with Viggo Mortensen and has offered him the role of Edgar Allan Poe in an upcoming feature.
With "Rambo" wrapped, Stallone's next project will be helming the tale of the famed tortured poet behind such famous works as "The Raven" and "The Tell-Tale Heart."
Mortensen is apparently consdiering the role although he wants some slight revisions in the script. Robert Downey Jr. was previously rumored to be up for this part.

I think it can work if they find the perfect guy. I'd prefer Robert Downing Jr over Viggo Mortensen though. Wow, just the thought of it is pretty exciting though: "I was never really insane except upon occasions when my heart was touched"--EAP

when I first saw Stallone's name I was thinking "oh shit he's gonna give himself the role" but i'm definitely glad to see he's not that stupid.

Coming to theaters July 4, 2008...he was a simple man...
"I was born to Quakers. We abhor violence."
...born into unsimple times...
"You a poet? Never!"
...who picked up a pen...
"Nooooo! ARRRGGGHHHH!!!"
...and buried it in the throats of those who stood in his way.
"I call it 'The Song of Myself.' It's only notes are the screams of my enemies. I wrote the sheet music in their blood."
Steven Seagal is...Walt Whitman: Leaves of Ass-kicking.

FYI Stallone has directed many movies just for the sole reason of directing/being part of the production team...............................

Sorry, but he'd be perfect for "The Tell-Tale Heart." A very grim-noire story, and he has that goth look to him for it. That, or Jack White.

I thought about Johnny Depp for Poe too, but then I think he may be getting a bit too "cartoonish" for such an intense part. The more I think about, Sean Penn may be the only guy who can get to that intensity.

It could be an interesting movie. I was always fascinated by Poe's stories. However, this movie appears to be a biopic about Poe himself and not one of his poems or short stories. The dude had a lot of darkness inside of him.

It is a biopic, and it will concentrate on the man rather than his writings.
He was an alcoholic who was in love with his cousin.
I really think Viggio can pull this off.

They married when she was 13 and never consummated the marriage. It is believed "Annabel Lee" is about her.

If you want intensity, Gary Oldman would be a fine pick. He is like a chameleon, too with how you can make him look physically.

You're right.
Annabel Lee is about her.
And, he went his whole life never letting go of the love he had for her.

Gary Oldman has a darkness to him that borders on insanity and rage.
I think Viggo does a better job of channelling sadness and despair.
I wouldn't turn my back on Oldman, but I really do think Viggo is a great fit.

Probably the absolutely most intense, heart wrenching thing I've ever read was his letter of proposal to her (I won't even try to quote, because for sure Funt will show up just to correct me :lol ). After I read that, Poe briefly replaced Vincent Van Gogh as my #1 DGILF. Came to my senses soon though!

I don't know, I saw Viggo a few nights ago on Letterman or Leno or something, and he seemed to be doing a great job of channeling "mousy twirp". I was very disappointed to say the least.

yup he would smirk it into secret window.Down side of Depp's commercial success, unfortunately. Still think he has the chops to pull it off, but it would be a bit too obvious a choice.

This was the only poem that I have read about necrophilia, it is quite good, but quite disconcerting.
BTW, I think Robt Downey Jr would have been great in this role.

What did you want him to do? Stay in character from Lord of the Rings? He was himself. The worst appearance I ever saw on a talk show was Patrick Stewart. He was goofy. Doesn't mean I don't want to see him up for parts. He won't be playing Patrick Stewart, he'll be playing whatever part.
Oh, and for whomever doesn't think Viggo can pull off the darkness required? Go back and watch or re-watch The Prophecy. His Satan was one of the most chilling, convincing, and evil I've seen.

And if they don't please you on a talk show appearance, they're not qualified for big or difficult parts? They're just people, and being someone else for a time is their job.

I never said ANYTHING about his job qualifications!!!! I was just making the point that I do not find him attractive. He can play any role you want him to, fine; just doesn't mean I will necessarily like him. I'm sure he doesn't give a shit what I think, why should you?
