3 years ago I registered for Spurstalk. I just want to give a huge thank you to everyone who makes this site worthwhile. Since it was really first such website I'd ever been a part of I didn't realize just how awesome this place is. I figured that enjoying the sort of freedom of expression allowed here was precisely the sort of thing the internet was for. Apparently there are in fact other sites where you can get in trouble if you were to tell someone who annoyed you that they are an ass-licking tub of shit. So the first round of props go out to the folks who own this site and keep it running. This is a very special place and I know it takes a ton of hard work to keep it that way. It is rare that great things simply happen. They are result of the hard work of great people and Spurstalk definitely falls under that category.

Next up I have to thank anyone who has ever posted on Spurstalk in the last three years. Thanks to all of you I've gotten a better understanding of basketball and the Spurs, as well as a good place to pass the time at work, at home, and at any other place where I can get net access. Any day of the year I know that anytime I drop by I can find no shortage of stuff here to make me think, laugh, or both. You guys kick ass.

I think the best way to sum up what this place means to me is what crossed my mind when easjer and I closed on our house. The thought, "I can't wait to tell my family" was followed very quickly by "I can't wait to tell Spurstalk."

:toast Here's to year #4!

It amazes me how much ST can become part of your life.

I Just got A phone call from
A lady who works for jay Howard.
She wanted a Rookie Emmitt smith card for her son.
as we started talking. She told me what did
I think about Jay Howard.
I acted like I knew everything,
and To My suprise,
she started telling me things I did not know.
There was A party, and jay howard had asked for more money,
But as the wine and booze kept flowing.
the words got heated,
and jay howard called the gorilla
A fat bastard, What this has to do with
him being gone? you put the puzzle toggether
all I know is this Topic may get deleted before you read it.

The only way that will happen is if the Spurs can WOAI and change
radio stations as the sponsor of the Spurs. That might be a
possibility since the Spurs will have 30 games on KRRT/KABB and only
10 on KENS. Turns out that the weak link station from Fredricksburg
did not cut it with the Spurs, so games were picked back up since
KENS could not preempt more than 10 games.
But back to Jay, he needs to be here and now. It will not be the
same. We will not be satisfied with substitute officials, substitute
players and no substitute Jays. Get this guy back and do it quick or
lives will be in the balance.

If you've been around Pro Sports long enough you know that when
someone gets fired because of a "business decision" it probably had
little to do with business and more to do with a personality
conflict.
This whole thing smells really bad. Maybe in the end we will find
that it was about the Jack that Howard was making compared to his
conterparts at OAI. Or maybe Howard just rubbed the Gorilla the
wrong way.
I know that when you get disrespected like Jay Howard has it's
usually because someone at the top wanted you gone.
The blow torch and it's sister station KTKR continue to be the only
sports game in this one horse town. If you want to find out who is
behind this whole thing all you have to do is ask yourself is who
has the most to benefit from Howard being gone?

Read Buck Harvey in he Ex News Sep 6.
Great article.
It is not posted on My SA . com

Here is some of the article;

"How Popovich lost his strongrest air wave."
... The Voice was fired and Popovich's volume could barely be
heard....
...These are business partners who go deeper than one radio
announcer.
Woai's owner Claer Channel is a minority owner in the Spurs.
Clear Channel also bought SFX, who will book a few things in the SBC
Center.
None of it mattered Pop owed Howard. Callers
learned about the problems with Bob Hill and why Pop knew what he
was doing even when trading for Charles Smith.
The company line could could be stright too and not just in 1999.
So upon learning of the move against howard, perhaps learning too
late? Pop jumped in said what he could with as much volume as he
had, and got voted down.
the silence isn't deafening. Its telling"
mybe Pop goes if this team is not on a pace to win 56 games at Xmas

Also there is a delay and he calls the play before it happens on tv!

O GREAT ONE you mean to tell me there is a radio delay and the play
already happened seconds before it came to my radio? Who the hell
would have ever guessed that one? Look first of all I would rather
have someone that is a (homer) calling the game than someone that
dosen't support the team. Most of the people listining to the game
want the Spurs to win and a voice on the other end that has the same
views is a bad thing why? And as for six months from now no one
missing him is a reach. Mark me down as one of them wishing he was
there. MOUSE your moving to BLANCO?

Outsider, I agree. I have no problem with a radio play-by-play
announcer being a homer. National TV broadcasts are a different
story. If it is a network or major cable channel televising a game,
then the announcers SHOULD be impartial.
Mouse, you mentioned cards. By chance, are you familiar with the
Topps football insert set from back in '72 (I think) that was a game
with small (6x9) posters and game pieces. Most of the people at the
local shops I've been to just look at me as if I'm speaking Swahili
when I mention the set. I only need about five of the game pieces to
complete the entire set. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, your right about the GREAT ONE.
Look genius I mentioned the delay because its impossible to watch it
on TV and listen to the radio because he calls it before it happens.

I guess you dont attend games so you can listen to your best friend
Howard.
I guess you dont watch any other national games either because they
have unbiased real host.
Every SPUR fan wants them to win but they dont want to hear how
every call is against the Spurs and the other team is getting every
call. Hence the national unbiased host.
Im sure Jay Howard is a regular part of your day and really gives a
crap about you. His play by play is average and he does nothing that
seperates him from other average play by play callers. The new guy
will do a fine job and life will go on without the arrogance.
By the way he couldnt talk football, baseball or hockey and dont
even bring up boxing or soccer or any other sports because he cant
speak about them.
BUT I guess your going to miss that also.
What are we going to do without our play by play man? Will life go
on? Jesus not JAY!!!!!

Maybe I'm not like you but I don't watch it on TV and listen to it
on the radio. I have alot more open mind then you and can figure out
what is going on by watching the game in person or on the TV without
it being explained to me. As for the national tv guys say this with
me (they are paid by the network they can't have an opinion or at
least show it on air) Jay was employed by the Spurs. I know this
will be hard to grasp so I'll stop there so you can figure it out
slowly. So maybe he dosen't care about me but what makes you think
that that is a hugh concern to me. Is that one of those middle
school things where I will be torn apart.I'm just saying in my mind
he did a great job and to me he will be missed and the only reason I
would listen was to hear about the Spurs so I didn't care what he
thought about other sports. I listen all day long and am up to date
on all the national news ,when they came on I wanted to hear the
latest news around San Antonio ,mostly the Spurs. So a lack of his
conversation on hockey, soccer, or boxing didn't bother me. Mouse if
you ever come west let me know.

Mouse,
That was not quite what I am looking for. The cards (game pieces)
and posters were special inserts in Topps football wax packs. There
was only one card or poster in every few packs. The cards were
rounded at the corners and had a double picture of a popular player
of the time. The cards also had moves such as "1 yard gain, 10 yard
gain, interception, 6 yard loss, etc.." The posters also had a
picture of a popular player on one side and a "football field" and
scoreboard on the reverse side. There were 52 game pieces in all and
32 "pin-ups." Players pictured included Bart Starr, Roman Gabriel,
Gale Sayers, Unitas, Butkus, Olsen, and Bob Hayes among others. If
that helps jog your memory let me know. I'm actually only missing
two game pieces to complete the set.

Jay was loved by many Spur fans and will be missed as their play by
play man....he was at the forefront and was like a brother to all
the Spur fans out there...some didn't like him....I sure wasn't fond
of him doing "Sportstalk San Antonio", however, I thought he did a
great job as play by play man.....he will be missed...

Bumpity boppity boo

This makes year number five as part of the Spurstalk community. It's been a very good one here, just complete shit everywhere else though. I'll reiterate my thanks to everyone who makes this place possible and enjoyable.

A quick google search reveals that the traditional 5 anniversary gift is wood, so I'll leave it to the good womenfolk of Spurstalk to either either post or PM me something that will give me wood. Thanks in advance.

:toast Congrats SFIE.

11/22/09 marks my five years as a member of Spurstalk. Since that time I probably read Spurstalk every day.

Here's to many more. :toast
