View Full Version : Neighbor's Barking Dogs

My neighbor has 2 dogs that they leave outside for hours every day.
The dogs bark almost non-stop.
We talked to them, asked them nicely if they could control the noise.
We got a "Bark Stopper" from SmartHome, it emits a high pitch noise when they bark. It helped for a short time but it's not helping anymore.
We called Animal Control for the city, they've come 3 times and talked to them, the barking continues. Animal Control said they can't do anything else, that if it continues we should file a civil "disturbing the peace" suit.
Does anyone have any experience with this? We don't want to take legal steps but the barking is making us all crazy. The weather is beautiful, I like to keep windows open. Even when they're shut we can hear them.
They bark at all times of the day and night. (We only called Animal Control when they were barking at 2 in the morning and woke us up.)
I know at least a couple of my other neighbors have also tried talking to them and at least 1 of them has also called Animal Control.
Any ideas? (Besides shooting the dogs? :lol )
It's getting on our last nerve. They've been barking non-stop for the last 3 days with no break.

You could kid-nap the dogs then dive em out to the country and set them free like in Seinfeld

Does your town have a noise ordinance? Call the police and maybe they will issue a citation.

Bullets leave the ability to trace to a gun. It sounds like multiple people have talked to them, and they are just unwilling to do anything. Throw poisined meat over the fence. They won't be able to tell which person did it, since many have complained.
The above was actually in jest, but people who flat don't GAF aren't neighbors, they're assholes. Take whatever steps you need to, up to and including police and tort law.

This is where we're at now.
I was hoping to not have to get to this point.
But...

You're on the money. They don't GAF, we've gone from trying/wanting to be nice about it, to now having to protect our sanity.
It's unreal how nerve racking the steady noise can be. And after they go on all day they wake us up at night.
We found the ordinance on the city's site, on Monday I'll start whatever I need to for a citation to be issued.
Thanks for the input.

My dogs do this to me. Where did you get the bark stopper thing and how much?
My dogs bark at the dogs next door though when they bark, so they're usually not making noise for the hell of it.

The "Bark Stopper" comes from SmartHome. They've got a site, (smarthome.com), they're local for us so I was able to go to their store.
There are 2 models, the less expensive one didn't work for us at all but the more expensive one (around $65. I think) worked for quite a while. If you get one get the power supply with it, it eats batteries.
You can adjust how sensitive it is which will determine how often it will go off. It has silent (only dogs hear it) and audible. When silent stopped working we switched to audible, that bought us a few more weeks but now I guess the dogs either tune it out or don't care.
These dogs bark at noise and for the hell of it. All day is excessive. The owners leave them outside when they leave the house so half the time there isn't even someone home. It's not neighborly and it's not good for the dogs.

Slingshots work well too. I'm sorry I may have misunderstood, but why would a city need someone to breed cats for them?

do you have an HOA?

We do, and they were our first thought.
I made a bunch of calls but couldn't get anyone who could tell me anything but "call the police and report the disturbance."
I guess the rules of the HOA are the same as the city's as far as disturbing the peace. Any noise between 10 pm and 6 am that disturbs neighbors is a violation of the ordinance.

:lol That was my first thought, too. I think the intent was that they don't fix their cats, thereby "supplying" SA with all of it's strays.
BTW, that can be reported, too. SA has a city limit on total cat population (inside and outside) for a household.

i could send mookie over there and he would exterminate them with extreme prejudice. there's nothing that mookie hates more than a quadriped. especiallly quadripeds that make noise.

Did just that and the animal control folks came over to talk with the people next door they said they did not own any of those stray cats, they just hung around the house.......
then to top that off I have some looney chick walking around the alleys feeding all these damn stray animals as well.... can't do shit about that either...
