I found this in an article written by Marc Stein from ESPN. He was talking about the most dominant trios in today's NBA. I don't understand the part where he says Manu took a significant discount. Was he talking about his present contract or did Manu get an extension recently?

Duncan just signed a two-year 40M dollar extension, how does that qualify as a SIGNIFICANT pay-cut, I though the league max was 22M ?

Manu is signed until 2010, so the article must be referring to his last contract.

I realize that, but the point I was making was that you never know what you get when you sign a player whether or not it's for big money. So $4M is significant, although the contract terms show that it is $11M.

Manu took discount when he signed contract last time (two or three years back). Denver was offering more to Manu and he took Spur's offer. I think it was in 2004 when he and Kenyon Martin were free agents/restricted free agents.

Duncan's first year of the extension pays $18.7 million, when he was eligible for $24.4 million... i.e., he took a $5.7 million paycut for his first season of the extension (and $5.5 million less than he could have for the second season).

Manu ended up with less than his street worth back in '04 due to the fact that he was a restricted free agent. Thank God.

The first one says there was a rumor they might offer him $60 million. The second one says there was a rumor they would make him a big offer. But they never made him an official offer because they thought the Spurs would match. If Manu was unrestricted, no doubt he would have gotten a lot of big offers but since he was restricted, he didn't.

I'm not sure what the Nuggets' final offer to Manu was, but it was clearly influenced by the fact that he was a restricted free agent. If he had hit the open market he would have gotten something like 50% more than he eventually did.
