i wanted to ask this question for a long time now, and with the mention of Renaldo Balkman as a potential long 3 for the spurs, i ask myself, how do the players view a spurs invitation?

would their reaction be:

a) "Wow! the Spurs! that must mean I can play defense!"
b) "Wow! the Spurs! that must mean I'm championship material!"
c) "Wow! the Spurs! but I already like it here with my team..."
d) "Wow! the Spurs! I probably won't get that much money but I'll get a ring!"
e) "Ehhhhh....I already earn more than they can afford to give me...."

seeing as Ime didn't jump the Spurs offer quite that fast, what would they be thinking if Pop and/or RC invited them over (with D-Rob/Timmy/TP in tow)?

just wanted to ask you guys. maybe this has been posted before?

or i am stupid?

Depends on the player...

Some guys want a chance to start more than anything.
Some guys want to be paid more than anything.
Some guys want to win a ring more than anything.
Some guys want to play in their home state or for their favorite team more than anything.

There is no one answer...

Right now the Spurs are comprised of a bunch of guys that want to win a titles...and took less to do so.

That pretty much describes every guy on the roster...

Parker took less than he could have.
Manu took less probably than he could have.
Bowen took less than he could have.
Barry took less than he could have.
Finley took less than he could have.
Duncan is going to take less than he could have.
Vaughn...
Oberto

Horry has taken less than he could have....

It shows.

Usually the young guys want to get paid first before they start placing the emphasis on winning a ring...

That's what's so uncommon about when Manu and Parker did it, becuase they were both pretty young...they could have both gone for a lot more money than they actually got...or they could have at least tried to go for it...

the last couple of seasons, we ran down on every possible long 3 replacement,

once the spurs are mentioned they are interested in that player, they think they are the shit, which indeed they are and end up on some lame team that feeds on our scouting...

seriously i hope one day we look at some totally shit player, and say we are interested, you will see these teams wanting to sign him

our long 3 will come in the draft, i cbf waitin for a prominent long 3 FA to sign with us...

last 3 seasons we didnt have a bowen backup = 2 rings

that's whats amazing about this team. but what about the rest of the nba?

surely when they are in front of the media being interviewed, all they say is that "we're a great team...it would be an honor...yaddayaddayadda..."

but would it be like winning an award? (after all..if you stick with them long enough, you'll get a ring?) would they be jumping up and down on their hundred-thousand dollar beds? :D

it's an invitation to join the champs, right? it must mean something.

like when everybody else came (post-2003). did they celebrate when they got the invite? I'm sure some of them felt like it.

I think you forgot a big consideration. San Antonio as a city. Not so much as a quality of life issue, because Timmy and the rest of the guys can make that argument with a potential free agent, but some players are such egotists that they think they have to play in LA or the 'Big Apple" or Chicago or Miami in order to get the recognition they crave.

Not to mention the nightlife and other scenes.

3. "Ugh...the Spurs! So much for enjoying basketball."

4. "Who?"

8. "Wow! the Suns! does that mean I get the yearly NBA rulebook, too?"

9. "Wow! the Suns! does that mean my coach gets to callout our loyal fans whenever our team plays lethargic?"

Typically, but not always...

If they are young players, they usually look at minutes and night life quality. "The rings will come, if they play me."

After they have been in the league 3 years, it's the big contract.

After they have been in the league for 7+ years, it's more about the organization and the championship opportunity.

d_s_f's comments merely reflect the way most nba viewers (viewers, not even fans) view the spurs. and he misses the gist of the question.

nba players do not view the spurs as "boring". they view them as "methodical", "precise", even "the best in the league". an invitation to join the spurs would please most nba vets (as that would mean they would get minutes) and would be tough for the rookies (as they would not only have to pass the physicals, preseason, regular season and d-league, plus the summer league next season).

as for the phoenix suns, joining them doesn't mean that much if you're not an all-star (or even an aging all-star) as most of their bench doesn't see the light of day much. you're there for insurance, not to contribute. this would severely discourage players who want to play (and encourage only those players who just want to be paid).

but for the spurs, even if you're not an all-star, they expect you to play, and play well. even if you're not a starter.

No...Im pretty sure most players who think theyre about to be traded to the Suns think:

CHA-CHING! CHA-CHING!

Go ask Tim Thomas, Joe Johnson, Eddie House, Steven Hunter, Boris Diaw etc.
