View Full Version : Chris Webber to Spurs?
Hello All, Happy Thanksgiving.
I know that Webber is a complete defensive liability, but he's still fairly decent on the boards, can hit spot up jumpers and is a terriffic post passer. Would he be enough of an offensive asset to sign on the cheap? Personally, I think it behooves the Spurs to find a better way to defend the Mavs, and Webber is not the answer to that problem, but he could offer some improvement over Bonner. Maybe.

It's 12 games into the season. I don't wanna shut down Bonner completely for, of all people, Chris Webber already.

where are you gonna fit chris webber into the already deep fwd/ctr rotation? They arent gonna just demote someone to make room for a guy who isnt gonna bring much more than what Fab already brings.. plus the guys we have now have good chemistry, theres no guarantee he fits in here..

But we are stacked already.

I've been a Webber fan most of his career, but the Spurs already tried this with Nick Van Exel.

Spurs should try to get Horry instead of Webber.

We have to consider it if Bonner keeps playing like a cane pole.

Bonner is just a plug in until Horry gets his groove back. Don't compound the problem by bringing in Chris Van Webber.

We should sign him for his ability to make clutch plays at the end of games

Y'Know, I've held my peace for months, but you just really need to post less. Your shit is beyond weak, and makes no sense. Horry's days at SF are long gone, like 10 years gone.

Wouldn't there be luxury tax implications if we signed Webber (or anybody for that matter)?

Not Webber but Anderson Varejao is available. He hasn't signed with anyone yet.

Keep Webbers loser intangibles away from the Spurs please... nothing against the guy he just makes AntiManu type plays.

Varejao is worse than Webber. And is demanding 7x the money as well.

Varajao isn't a FA, he's just holding out for more money from the Cavs. They still technically own his rights until the end of this season.
They offered him the one-year tender and he declined it, but he's still Cavs property.
At the end of this year, he'll be a FA if he doesn't sign a long-term deal before then.

He never has made any sense... I'm surprised you'd bother to comment on it! :lmao
As for Webber, he is cursed, which seemingly goes for all of the Fab 5, none of whom have an NBA Champion's ring. No way I want him messing with our defence, karma or chemistry.
Pass.

I think if we're talking Bonner vs. Webber, Bonner has more of a Spurs attitude. He's very community oriented and down to earth. Chris Webber is literally at home in Detroit. That's part of why he signed there. I don't doubt that Webber isn't a nice guy and would give his heart to this Spurs organization, but Bonner, in my opinion, feels more Spurs-y to me.

Webber said if he ever was to play in the NBA it would be for the Pistons.

Or we could sign Arvydas Sabonis. They have basically the same skill set and mobility, but I'm betting Arvydas would be cheaper.

Chris Webber is like kryptonite for a championship. no way
Gang, I hear where you're coming from, but I don't think that Webber is nearly as far gone as Van Exel was when he played for San Antonio. He, for example, is still capable of double digit rebound games and can pass out of the post---if he were available at a couple million or less for the remainder of the season he might be worth the 15th roster spot.
A few of you suggested Varajao, and that makes great basketball sense. Varajao is a great team defender and would give the Spurs a formindable body to throw at Dirk. He's also well ouside the Spurs price range and would require a sign and trade of Barry and probably a second round draft pick to get it done---and that without any guarantees of his being in a Spur uniform beyond this year. Webber is not half the player that Varajao is, but he is available at a much lower price. The Webber suggestion is more in line with the flier the Spurs took on Glen Robinson a few years back, not the ill-founded confidence they placed in Nick Van Exel. And, again, I'd still prefer Webber to Bonner.

The Spurs should ABSOLUTELY sign Chris Webber. It's really their only chance at repeating.
