I don't have a video of him clapping, but here's his huge hands.
Also, his nails are pretty long. Maybe it hurts if they hit his hands.

I think he looked pretty good these couple of games. We don't see him in street clothes very often.

I believe that jacket is the team sports coat. Tim just wears his regular attire (jeans/Timberlands) and adds the coat when he gets to the arena.

I totally agree. It actually pissed me off a bit to see him. Even when a Spur would make a great play, he couldn't smile or yell or pump his fist or do anything to convey his appreciation. He just stood there like a dolt, clapping politely. Very disappointing.

I don't want to disagree with Kori, but...
I'm not sure it's the same sports coat that he wore Wednesday.
They're similar, very similar, but they don't look like the same one.
Different lapel. And different buttons, there are other pics that show it.
Maybe there are a couple the team keeps around?

My bad.

I didn't see the word "few" in your second post. I only caught "the team sport coat" in your first post about it. I went off to find the pic and posted without catching up in the thread. Lesson learned: Always read before responding.

I know you know, and you've posted things about the "team" coat since the league put the rule in.

I was really just trying to see if it was the same coat. They look so much alike.

Defense.

You can see Duncan scratched up after lots of games, especially in the playoffs when things get even more physical.

I assume he can scratch as well as get scratched.

really? Seems to me it would be more comfortable handling the ball with no nails.

really? Seems to me it would be more comfortable handling the ball with no nails.

I would think so too.
But his nails have always been long. Longer than just nice nails would be.
There's got to be a reason.
I'm basing it on my observations of how scratched his arms get after physical games: my guess is defense.
If he's getting that beat up underneath, the guys he's defending must be too.

RuffnReadyOzStyle
12-08-2007, 03:00 AM
Um, why aren't the refs checking player's nails if scratching is a problem? Hell, I've played in amateur leagues where they won't let you on the court with long nails.

timvp
12-08-2007, 03:05 AM
why the long nails? My guess would be he feels like it gives him an extra couple centimeters when trying to block a shot.

Chuck Person used to grow out just the nail on his left thumb. He'd grow it out about an inch and he said it helped him put more rotation on his jumper.

duncan228
12-08-2007, 03:05 AM
Um, why aren't the refs checking player's nails if scratching is a problem?

Good question.
I have no idea.

And my take is only my observations. I've got no proof, no quotes.
But if you go back and look at pics from any playoff series, check out Duncan's arms. You'll see the scratches. The Seattle series in '05 is one of the best examples.

I don't know why else would his nails be that long.
Anyone else have any ideas?

I wonder if it would hurt if the nail got bent hitting the ball. Ouch!

Yeah, those long nails surprised me as well. One off the things that can really piss a player off, is being scratched by someone elses long nails. "Trim your damn nails"...I've said it more than once myself...had it said to me a couple of times too.

At the Pro level tho...mebbe it's just another offensive/defensive weapon used. Is there a nail war going on under the radar?

Enquiring minds...

Maybe he has long nails because he likes it that way but com'on, cut that shit out.
In amateur ball they check your finger nails before you take court and I think they should do it in the NBA also. You can injure a player and maybe transfer some blood diseases.

I'm no fashionista, so I can't believe I'm about to talk about Tim's wardrobe (because I couldn't care less), but here goes...

I can't be certain, but aren't the "What Not To Wear" people always talking about mixing and matching...suit jackets with jeans to make the style more casual?

I'm not saying that he's doing this be to hip or anything, just saying...

remingtonbo2001
12-08-2007, 01:11 PM
why the long nails?

That's his defense when someone kicks him the groin, or pokes him in the eye. He scratches them. Really, I think there is an article or two on Tim's nails and the scratch marks he has left on opposing players.

It's the same thing with Manu and flinging his hair in the opponents eyes.

When I was playing, I always kept my nails shorter than the extent of the end flesh, after getting a couple nails snagged and ripped in jerseys and shorts, which is not only painful but then leaves a ragged nail to get snagged again.

But I never sat on the bench neurotically manicuring or chewing my nails like a Bibby or a LeBron. :)

Speaking of scratches, DRob got a huge one above his left bicep in his 71 point game. It was still visible nine years later. I guess you do what you have to do.
