Unless you have at least a dual-core processor, a close to cutting edge video card and scads of RAM, Vista is a waste. I've had to work on a few lately with Vista and it drove me (more) nuts. And Vista Home Basic is less than worthless, all the slow and none of the pretty graphics.
Well, it does have some improved security features and other technical pluses, but I'm sticking with XP pro. Most of the security issues today are related to social engineering. ("The pop-up told me my computer was infected and I needed to download the spy program. Aren't they so helpful?")

I've got XP on my desktop and Vista on my laptop and I like them both. Only differences I've even noticed are the additional security features and the way Vista looks.

I just got a new laptop with Vista. So far, so good. There was a ton of crap programs on the machine but it wasn't too difficult to get rid of. Vista is definitely a memory hog, but memory for the new laptops is really cheap these days.

I just finished setting up a PC for a friend last week. It's also a Dell and it was delivered with Vista. It's a pretty powerful model with 2 GB of RAM lots of HDD and the fastest dual core they are offering right now.

For what he will use it I have little doubt that he'll be happy with it (writing in MS Word, Internet surfing, e-mail and sorting out his CD collection). He really like things like the gadget that shows the RSS feeds and the clock (!?). Generally Vista is cute, so I guess it's OK. :lol

But in all honesty, to do that stuff you shouldn't have to buy a machine that can render 3D animations on XP faster than my 2 years old dual P4 workstation. It's way over the top and that fact alone makes me hate Vista.

I also don't like how difficult it is to get the bloody OS to behave the way I want it and how it keeps forcing MS stuff on you. I also know a couple of companies who had huge problems because they wanted to integrate the new Vista PCs into their existing network and keep their existing applications.

Now we've been through this many times before and we'll all end up with Vista sooner or later (I'll probably be in the later category), but at the moment the safe choice is still XP. It's a bit of "better the devil you know" and the shear amount of bugs in Vista can seriously mess with you if your living depends on your computer.

Oh and Kori, tell that husband of yours (:p:) to get you the best anti virus, anti spyware and firewall software. If anybody needs those its you with the hours you spend online :tu (and surfing those shaddy shoe webstores all the time :D).

Just had some goofiness with Vista while trying to install a printer that is connected to an XP machine over the home network. Found an easy fix, but it's the kind of thing that would make a typical user throw the laptop against a wall.

Vista is horrible. Maybe in a couple years, when 4-8 Gigs of Ram is the standard it will be considered an acceptable OS, but it is junk right now.

We've really reached a great point with PCs now. You can afford a great computer with a big monitor for well under $1000 now, as long as you are not a gamer.
