D-League Power Rankings: December 12, 2007

by Matthew Brennan, D-League.com

Another week, another team takes the top spot in the D-League Power Rankings as the Austin Toros grab the crown after winning their fifth straight game. It has been a tough ride at the top of the Power Rankings this season, as Idaho and Iowa both lost their next two games after being ranked first. The Rio Grande Valley Vipers hold steady in second after the Toros handed them their first home loss and snapped a three-game winning streak on Tuesday night. The Colorado 14ers, who move into third place after winning four of their last five, will have a great chance to make a move for the number one ranking as they will play the Toros three times in the next week.

Discuss this week's Power Rankings in D-League Fan Voice.

This Week: at Bakersfield, Anaheim

13. Bakersfield Jam, 2-7, last week 13th: Bakersfield is undefeated at home but has dropped all seven of their games on the road to start the season. Unfortunately, the Jam still will play five of their next eight games away from home, so they will need to pick up some road wins to stay in contention in the West Division. New acquistion Andre Barrett is second in the D-League with 9.2 assists per game.
This Week: at Los Angeles, Albuquerque, at Los Angeles

14. Sioux Falls Skyforce, 1-5, last week 14th: The Skyforce defeated Idaho to get into the win column on Friday, but then fell to Dakota to fall to 1-5. The Skyforce also lost one of their leading scorers to Europe in Antywane Robinson, but the team picked up veteran Kasib Powell as a replacement. Powell scored 20 in his debut for Sioux Falls and should be an impact player for the Skyforce as the season continues. Sioux Falls is on the road this week against division rivals Iowa and Dakota.

Washington's numbers, outside of his turnovers, look really good.

I'm not really worried about turnovers right now because they're not really of the "bad pass" variety or the offensive foul variety. Most of the turnovers are just stupid things like carrying, which is called pretty damn often in the D-League. I think once he gets back up, you'll see those numbers improve.

I'd say his TOs are a fair mix of both. The violations are the kind of things rookies get called for anyway. I do think it's a fixable problem.

If he keeps this kind of production up, do you think the Spurs will keep him in Austin or give him a rotational try?

Couldn't hurt to do so in the regular season.

Bullish Toros: Langford, Washington take sting from Vipers

Todd Mavreles
December 12, 2007 The Monitor

HIDALGO — Bob Hoffman didn’t stick around to see the end of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers’ 119-113 loss to Austin on Tuesday night at Dodge Arena, but what he saw before exiting was a physical Toros team that took control of an intensely played D-League game down the stretch.

Hoffman, who was ejected after picking up his second technical foul with 2:53 remaining, was perhaps frustrated by many things: the referees’ non-stop foul calls in the second half; the Toros’ inside-your-jersey defense and the clutch play of Austin guards Darius Washington (29 points) and Keith Langford (23 points).

Whatever the case, the Vipers (6-2) suffered their first home loss of the season.

“Our guys played hard. We just missed a few shots,” Hoffman said. “It was a great basketball game. There were some serious players on the floor. We just didn’t make enough plays at the end, and I didn’t do a very good job at the end getting us into some things we could to make some things happen.”

Austin (5-1) broke free from an 87-87 tie after three quarters, building a 97-90 lead with 8:33 remaining on Eric Dawson’s dunk off a steal.

But a furious final surge, keyed by RGV’s C.J. Watson (23 points), pulled the Vipers to within 103-101 with 5:20 remaining.

A putback by Ian Mahinmi (13 points), and then a dunk by Mahinmi after a Washington steal pushed Austin’s lead to 110-103. Hoffman picked up his second technical foul arguing that Washington’s steal should have instead been a foul, putting Gabe Muoneke on the line for two free throws.

Instead, Hoffman’s leap and punch of the air caught the official’s eye, forcing him to miss the final 2:53.

A little more than one minute later Langford drained the dagger 3 pointer to put Austin up 118-109 and even the season series at 1.

“This team has a lot of fresh faces and new guys, so it’s really difficult to get guys in the right places because we’ve only been together a couple of weeks,” said Washington, who was recently assigned to the Toros by the San Antonio Spurs. “I only got to the team a week ago. We have a lot to do on pick and roll and help defense. But I say it all the time, being from the Spurs I’ve seen those guys and nobody panics. Everybody has a little run and everything they shot was going in. But we kept our composure and chipped away.”

The Vipers led by as many as 13 points during the first half, but Austin rallied to trail 58-56 at halftime. Quin Snyder’s Toros then came out the second half with a greater commitment to blanketing the Vipers’ shooters, funneling drivers into Mahinmi, who blocked a handful of shots and altered at least a half dozen.

Muoneke led the Vipers with 25 points, and Aaron Brooks had 22 points, six rebounds and six assists.

“I think we got tired (in the second half). I think that’s pretty much it,” Muoneke said. “I know I did. I’ve got to find a way to get easy points. They’ve got really good players. Darius Washington played really well. Keith Langford played really well. And they’ve got an NBA post man (Mahinmi). We should have won the game when we were up big in the beginning, then we kind of strayed from what we were doing. But our team is young, so it’s not a big deal.”

Darius will be called up at some point, maybe soon if Parker needs some time off. I'm sure the Spurs are pretty reluctant to burn a call-up if they don't have to.

D-Wash would have thrived in the situation the Spurs were in last night. Manu and Tony were stinking it up, we had to rely on offense from Vaughn and Bonner, D-Wash would have chipped in more than Vaughn and even helped capture the W. Spurs need to bring him in NOW!

ummm, if your scoring 28 points and 8 rebounds and however how many assists, I think its ok if his TO is high, just means he has the ball in his hands alot. ALot of good players have high TO because they have the ball so much.

If you're happy with a point guard's having a 1:1 assist to turnover ratio, we might as well call him up now and have him play 48 mpg.

Didn't see this in the boxscore. Is it true?

Didn't see this in the boxscore. Is it true?Doubt it unless one block is considered a handful these days.

Then again, the stat keepers in the minor leagues are notoriously horrible.

I'd like the story on this someday. Have they been keeping an eye on him since last year, when he was cut by Dallas? Did they have him in mind during the draft this year and that's why they didn't bother even with Zabian Dowdell at the end, instead trading the Greek SF off to Toronto? Did they know that early that Darius was coming in for training camp?

Or, as more likely, did he just fall into their laps?

He played with the Mavs summer league team last year, and was the last guy to get cut. I think they were probably aware of his presence, although the camp invitation was probably just for camp bodies.
