So I was given a computer that is relatively old. It has no ethernet port on the back and it runs windows 98. It's a Gateway Essential. I was able to find a cord that would go from my cable modem and connect to the pc through usb, and it showed up on my computer. However, I couldn't get internet because it only recognizes phone lines. So I'm guessing I may need a driver or something? Also would like to wipe the hard drive and basically just start over with it. Maybe install Linux. If you could help me with any of these things thank you.

First. Forget the USB and get a NIC. They're like $10.

Second. If you need help on how to perform a clean install of an OS then you're not going to want any part of Linux.

Buy a PCI network card. If it's one of those really compact Gateway computers make sure it has a half-height adapter. It should cost about as much as the computer is worth.

Eh, I figured lol. Any ideas on how to improve the system performance? Btw, this is more of a project for me, not looking to spend tons of money or anything on it, but its just something for me to work on.

Do they even make 18 packs of Rolling Rock? Or should he just staple a six pack to the 12 pack?

argghh... thought I was going to take the day off today, then I got a call from the boss saying the fax machine was broken (and being medical in nature, some of those faxes are urgent). So I rouse myself from my stupor, head down through the cold and the traffic to play Mr. Fixit. Sure enough, the paper won't go through and nothing will print. Funny thing though, is that the toner cartridge just seems too small and doesn't seem to feel right when you slide it into the slot. Turns out someone changed the toner cartridge and almost threw away the drum unit with the old cartridge.

Mouse, if I get too lazy I'll drop off a friend's computer so you can wipe the harddrive and reinstall Windows. I finished my last final exam yesterday, and my brain is officially on holiday.
