M's are going 4 years - 44 million for Carlos Silva.

Why don't they just let the Cubs give them Marquis and be done with it...

I thought Jose Guillen's deal was pretty bad as well.

Guillen's actually posted at least a 116 OPS+ in 4 out of the last 5 years.

Silva is a league average pitcher last year who was god-awful 2 years ago.

I've never understood the value in 'innings eaters' when they are eating poor innings...

Take into consideration situation as well. M's just missed the playoffs and need a little more stability at third/fourth starting pitcher position in the rotation.

KC is a perennial cellar dweller in the Central with young talent that they can never re-sign so they end up trading them away. Why sign a guy like Jose Guillen who actually is in his prime? Stay young. And, hope you can keep some of your young talent. Jose Guillen would be a better fit as a role player on a winning team like the Yankees or Braves. It's a horrible signing because the Royals don't need 31 year old veterans to help them make a playoff push. There will be no playoff push.

With the Mariners, they need a decent third or fourth pitcher in their rotation.

He's not taking anybody's spot. KC really doesn't have anybody young ready to take the LF/middle of the order spot that he'll fill.

They're trying to add some legitmacy to a franchise that is viewed as a joke around the baseball world. With or without Guillen, they are not going to catch the Indians or Tigers, but they've got a good chance to be right there with the White Sox and Twins. It also speaks volumes to the fans and future free agents that this is the second year in a row they've handed out a 10+ million/year deal.

Personally, I agree with you and wouldn't have signed him. But I see what they are trying to do. I wouldn't have spent $11 million/year on Gil Meche either. But you could make a legitimate argument that - of the big money free agents - he performed the best of all the pitchers last year.
