WASHINGTON (Ticker) - The Washington Wizards on Thursday named Milt Newton as director of player personnel.

The move comes less than two weeks after assistant general manager Rod Higgins left the organization. Higgins, who spent three years with the team, reached a mutual agreement with Wizards' president Ernie Grunfeld on August 1.

Newton had served as director of player personnel for the National Basketball Development League since May 2000. His responsibilities included evaluating, recruiting and signing players and assisting with the league's day-to-day basketball operations.

"Milt will be an outstanding addition to our staff," said Wizards general manager Ernie Grunfeld. "His work experience in the NBDL and the NBA, and his first-hand experience with the developing basketball talent around the world will be a great asset to us as we work to improve this team for the future."

Newton was a starter on Kansas' 1988 championship team which featured Danny Manning. After college, he went on to play for the Rockford Lightning and the Grand Rapids Hoops in the Continental Basketball Association.scoop (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/gen/wire?messageId=19881057)
