Where was the A.J. is OK question on the poll.

I don't think he deserves a jersey retirement but I do appreciate the contributions he made during the championship years.

He just isn't in the same league as Gervin, Silas, etc. but on the other hand my standards kick out Johnny as well so perhaps I'm a little tougher rater than the Spurs FO.

Niether. I appreciate his contributions and fiery leadership while he was a Spur.

Meh, he was an average PG at best. Not worth hatin' or lovin'.

it was clear that he imprinted his character on this team when he was still playing. he gave the team the toughness that was at times lacking from robinson and elliot. now, if only he could hit more jumpshots...... :lol

Not sure his Jersey should be retired.

I don't hate him but I do seriously dislike him as far as anything basketball goes.

I don't know enough about him as a person to make a fair judgement.

AJ was one of my favorite Spurs. The first NBA game I ever attended was the Spurs against the Rockets where AJ had a great game and helped his team win. Unfortunately, he was a Rocket at the time. He did everything with class, was a great leader and hard worker, was tough and was a good sport. I was sad to see him go, and I still rooted for him until he retired as a player. He'll always be a hero of the Spurs, and nothing will ever be as special to me as that first championship.

From a basketball perspective, the Spurs had a lot of years where they had no point guard at all, and AJ was the best the team could do. I certainly understand why those in charge who spent lots of time in the trenches with AJ would want to reward him for his efforts, even if I remove my emotions from the conversation and disagree with that decision. Since it's done, I'm perfectly happy to look into the rafters with pride and remember what AJ did for my team, regardless of what he did after he left.

The Spurs like him. They had to live with him day after day. He wasn't the greatest PG in NBA history...but, for the SPURS to want to retire his jersey, there had to be something there. For him to get a Dallas Head coach position and take them to the Finals...there has to be something there.

I'll defer to their decision.

I do remember liking his leadership on the team when he was here.

Popovich :

"There are a lot of players that have more stats than Avery and they don't get their jerseys retired," Popovich said. "He's always going to be a San Antonio Spur in our minds. And that's because of what he did in the community."
