Bucks hire Mike Schuler as assistant
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Terry Porter made his first hire as coach of the Milwaukee Bucks Wednesday when he named longtime NBA veteran Mike Schuler as an assistant coach.

Schuler, 62, brings more than 35 years of coaching experience to the Bucks, who hired the 40-year-old Porter last week to replace George Karl.

Schuler has spent five seasons as a head coach and 11 as an assistant in the NBA. His most recent stint was on Flip Saunders' staff in Minnesota from 1994-2000, the first three years as an assistant and the final three as a scout.

``Mike is a first-rate coach who I had the pleasure of working with when I played with Portland and Minnesota,'' Porter said. ``He has a terrific knowledge of the game, and is able to extend that to the players he works with.''

Schuler's head coaching record was 179-159 with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Los Angeles Clippers in the 1980s and early '90s.

Schuler began his NBA career with New Jersey in 1981 under Larry Brown. From 1983-85, he worked for Don Nelson in Milwaukee before taking over the head coaching duties at Portland in 1986.

A 1962 graduate of Ohio University, Schuler spent three years as a high school coach before joining Bobby Knight's staff at Army in 1965.

He also served as an assistant at Ohio and Virginia and as head coach at the Virginia Military Institute and Rice University. scoop (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/gen/wire?messageId=19786199)
