San Antonio Spurs forward Robert Horry and Five Star Cleaners are collecting coats for the Alamo City's needy.
Horry will be at Five Star's 14415 Blanco Road location today from 3 to 5 p.m. to help promote the Cold Days Warm Hearts Winter Coat Project.
Horry has been honorary chairman of the project for the past three years. Through Jan. 31, all 17 area Five Star Cleaners will be accepting gently used winter coats.
Company officials say the donated coats will be cleaned and repaired. Then they will be distributed to needy families. Any and all coats are welcome.
Coats of all sizes, styles and colors will be accepted. They will be delivered to the Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM) and San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries (SAMM).
The project collected more than 5,000 coats last winter. The goal this winter is 10,000.
Each person who donates a coat will receive a $5 gift certificate good toward any future dry cleaning order courtesy of Five Star Cleaners.
"For the past three years, I have been proud to spearhead this worthwhile community effort for Five Star Cleaners," Horry says. "It's important to take care of the less fortunate in our community."
Horry adds, "By working together, we can make a difference to those in need."
Sharlene Thum, co-founder of Five Star Cleaners, says her 28-year-old company "believes in giving back to the community."
"There are so many people who are less fortunate," she explains. "By partnering together, we can make San Antonio a better and warmer community for all."
CAM is a cooperative ministry founded in 1977 by nine downtown San Antonio churches. It offers temporary assistance to people in crisis who have an immediate need for food, clothing, emergency financial aid, showers or laundry facilities. It also operates a day shelter for the unemployable homeless.
SAMM has operated as an interfaith ministry whose mission is to help the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless attain self-sufficiency by offering shelter, housing and certain services.
