Jeff McDonald: Manu is in
LOS ANGELES -- After missing the past five games with a sprained index finger, Manu Ginobili will make his return this afternoon against the Clippers.
At least that's what Gregg Popovich says. Ginobili jokes he will believe it when he sees it. He even brought his sport coat with him to the Staples Center, in case Popovich changes his mind.
Popovich says he won't. He's tired of seeing Ginobili in street clothes.
"That's the only reason," Popovich said.
Ginobili originally injured the finger Dec. 22 against these same Clippers. He said he could have played two games ago against Denver, and partially expected to.
"He's been on me for a while," Popovich said in his pre-game pow-wow with reporters this afternoon. "I kept him out a little longer than he would have liked. I'd rather err on the conservative side, especially this early in the season."
Ginobili says he's itching to get back on the floor.
"It's been a long time, or at least it seems like it," Ginobili said. "I'm happy to get out there and help our team win and get back into a rhythm."
Ginobili is averaging 19.2 points per game, the lion's share of the league-leading 38.8 per game the Spurs' bench accounts for.
