The Mavs have had our number in the regular season when we matchup. Their depth has hurt us in the past, this is the first time since 2004 where we actually have good enough depth to nullify that a little bit.

They just play a style that the Pistons don't match up well against. Hopefully that will change now, we do play a bit differently this year than we have the last few years because of our bench.

Yes the series is 2-2, the Pistons beat the Mavs last year in Dallas when they were of to that bad start, but we beat them in Detroit. And two years ago, when the Pistons were off to that great start, the Mavs were the first to beat them, by something like 30 points. We play well against the Pistons, their overall talent does not create matchup problems against us.

Pistons-Mavericks Preview
By DAN PIERINGER, STATS Writer

The Dallas Mavericks and the Detroit Pistons have learned a lot about playing second fiddle this season. Thanks to its recent surge, however, Dallas might not be toiling in the shadows much longer.

Looking to claim a share of the Southwest Division lead for the first time in two months, the Mavericks go for their season high-tying fifth straight win on Wednesday when they host the Pistons - the second-best team in the Eastern Conference.

Dallas had the league's best record last season at 67-15, while Detroit led the East with 53 wins.

This season, however, the Mavericks (23-11) have yielded Southwest supremacy to the reigning NBA champion San Antonio Spurs, while the Pistons (26-8) have taken a back seat to the new-look Boston Celtics in the East.

The Mavericks, though, can erase their half-game deficit and reclaim a share of the division lead for the first time since they were 4-1 on Nov. 8 with a win against Detroit. New Orleans, tied with Dallas for second place, can also take advantage of the idle Spurs on Wednesday as it hosts the Los Angeles Lakers.

Dallas has made its run by winning nine of its last 11 games, including its last four. The Mavericks outscored Minnesota 58-35 in the first half of their 101-78 win on Sunday - their second consecutive victory over a team in last place in its conference.

"We didn't want to play to the level of our competition," Dallas forward Josh Howard told the team's official Web site.

While Dallas has taken advantage of lesser opponents - it beat lowly Miami on Friday - the schedule wasn't as kind to Detroit in its last outing.

The Pistons had their 11-game win streak snapped with a 92-85 home loss to Boston on Saturday. They're downplaying the significance of the defeat, which dropped them four games behind the Celtics.

"They're a little more happy than we were when we won our game at their place," Detroit point guard Chauncey Billups said, referring to the Pistons' 87-85 victory in Boston on Dec. 19. "It was just a regular game for us with two good teams playing. They were kind of playing like it was the Super Bowl.

"There was probably a little more at stake for them and their psyche than it was for us."

The Pistons will have to deal with another good team in the Mavericks, who are playing better lately thanks in part to the resurgence of Dirk Nowitzki. The sharpshooting forward got off to a slow start, scoring less than 20 points in 11 of his first 24 games, but lately has played more like he did during his MVP season in 2006-07.

"I felt like early on, I was looking around too much for what was going to happen," said Nowitzki, averaging 25.6 points and 9.2 rebounds in his last 10 games. "I was waiting on the double team too much and I wasn't really being aggressive. Over the last couple of weeks, I've found a good mix of when my shot is there. And when it's not there, move (the ball)."

Nowitzki averaged 28.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent from the field against Detroit as the teams split last season's series.

The Pistons won in Dallas last season, and have gone 9-1 in their last 10 road games.

The Mavericks, meanwhile, are 16-3 at American Airlines Center.

Everyone keeps talking about how Dallas is a matchup problem for Detroit, but have you all forgotten how this is not the same Dallas team as last season? Dallas is probably the worst it's been since the 2003-2004 season when they only won 52 games, which is what they're on pace to win now.

The Mavs just took care of business and beat a team they were supposed to beat. Detroit tried to come out and shoot some shots but the Mavs awesome defense made sure they didn't get some lucky bounces, no surprises there. When a non contender (Detroit) gets their asses handed to them by a real contender (Boston), of course they will play scared the next time they face a real contender (Dallas), not some fake fluke contender like the Spurs.

Dallas is making all these threes..it's the same old tired bullshit.

Where was it in Finals 2006 and playoffs first round last year?

It's fake. They can make 100 in a row and I wouldn't be impressed. The Spurs, Hornets, Lakers and Celtics all shoot more 3 pointers than the Mavs.

Not to mention the Warriors and the Suns.

I just want to thank SpursDynasty for this win. It might not have been possible with out one of his signature voodoo jinx threads.

Thanks SD, you rock!

Dallas will be one of the top 3 teams in the WC this year. They are good and from what I've seen have not dropped off like SAS and PHX have this year. Avery seems to be pacing his guys to peak towards the playoffs.

I still question whether the Mavs can go all the way without a true interior presence. Damp and Diop are just big bodies that can rebound, there is very little offensive game between them. As a result the Mavs are primarily a jumpshooting team, and it's very hard to win when you're a jumpshooting team with no reliable post options.

The Spurs have not "dropped off". The only important record to me is 17-4, which is their record when our three guys are healthy. Dallas and Phoenix are lucky to have us drop some games due to injuries, they are not on the same level as the Spurs as the deceiving standings might show.

This is the final thing I'll say on last night's Dallas vs. Detroit game...

My whole point is...Detroit was just missing shots and being careless. Why would they waste all of their energy on Dallas when they play the superpower of the NBA the next night?

I didn't see Dallas executing some big game plan or anything...Detroit was just missing their shots. Dallas is playing the same way they've played since '04-'05....nothing new. I hate how just because they get past the Spurs in 2006 with help from the referees that EVERYTHING they do after that has to have some exclamation point after it.

Hey dickmouth - 100% of the teams that lose ANY game lose because they don't make their shots. Boston did it last night, the Spurs the other and Detroit last night. I guarantee that a team that shoots 100% will win every game they play.

Unfortunately, neither math or basic logic are your strong suit. Enjoy the extra chromosome.

Speaking of you SpursDynasty, I learned last night that it's not a good idea to stick your fingers in your girl's face after sex and ask "Ever wondered what your coochie smells like?"

But you're a virgin, so you wouldn't know anything about that.

Yes, you are still the biggest IDIOT on this forum. Does it not occur to you that virtually ALL teams have and will go through injuries? The Mavs had virtually no bench at the start of the season...

They weren't missing anyone significant.

Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili are all of equal importance.

Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili are all of equal importance.

No, they're not.
Each one brings things we need, we suffer when any of them are out.

But without Duncan this team doesn't win a Championship.

Parker and Ginobili are vital to the Spurs success, as are our role players.
But no one is more vital than Duncan.
Not for the last 10 years anyway.

He's posting there more often lately.
He was easier to ignore when he was mostly here.

I try to take his bs for amusement purposes only but sometimes he says something that will piss me off enough to respond.
I guess that's what he does to everyone, if we respond he's got his audience.

I know it's easy to believe that because of how stupid he sounds, but SpursDynasty is very serious about everything that he says. I guess you weren't around when he got his feelings hurt and said he was never going to post here again. He left for a few weeks to go to a different board. People don't get their feelings hurt when they are saying stuff they don't mean to make jokes.

I know what you're saying, but I still think he's doing a bit. He's just really good at it.

Nobody can actually believe the stuff he writes. It's too contradictory and absurd.
