Don't know if this had been discussed yet. If so, sorry.

Jostling for Jones

Not surprisingly, there was interest in forward Bobby Jones after he was waived Monday by the Nuggets.

Jones said Portland was intrigued but needed to make a trade due to having the maximum of 15 players. He said San Antonio and Dallas also called his agent, although the Mavericks also have 15.

Jones chose Memphis. He signed a 10-day contract Thursday, which he hopes will lead to a deal for the rest of the season.

"I know they're not doing that well right now, but this is probably the best place for me to get some playing time," he said.

As for the Nuggets letting him go, Jones said "some of it was money and some was so they could have some open roster spots" for possible future moves. The Nuggets, deep into the luxury tax, saved roughly $820,000.

The Nuggets have a $2.95 million trade exception that expires today. But it's unlikely they will use it.

I would have liked the signing a lot.

Offered a 10-day contract. As I stated before, Spurs FO plan to use this 10 day option to "audition" a possible roster filler come March.

Above average defender, solid all around skills, good size for a swing man. I'm surprised he hasn't hooked on with a team yet.

From Draft Express:

Bobby Jones is a defensive stopper in the truest sense. He has great size and quickness and moves his feet intelligently, always staying in front of his man and taking great pride in harassing whoever he is guarding. He is a versatile defender as well; being used in college to defend any position on the court 1-5. Jones does a good job with post defense and he can defend shorter players on the perimeter as well. He is exceptional at sliding his feet from side to side, knowing when to extend or advance his on the ball defensive position and having the instincts to retreat backwards while staying in his defensive stance and keeping his technique.

Sounds like a current Spur.

It would have been nice to get a look at him but I'm sure he also knew he wasn't going to get playing time here to prove himself. All you have to do is look at the roster, all the players they've brought up and waived recently, and know you don't have much of a chance.

Maybe they'll get another chance if Memphis waives him.

waste of time to talk abt someone that would be the bench warmer for Spurs averaging 0.25 seconds per game and 0.5 points per game....

Why would we need another defensive (only) stopper with Bowen and Udoka already on board?

We are struggling to put points ON the board right now. We need shooting guards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We're giving up a lot of points. The Spurs are always near the top on opponents FG%, but not this year. This year's team is nowhere near teams in the past when it comes to defense.

At least we can't say that Spurs aren't trying to get some new blood at the wings: James White last year, Marcus Williams and Ime Udoka this summer and they are trying tons of players this year.

I don't think someone averaging 5,760 points/48 minutes is going to be warming the bench...

(.5 per .25 seconds = 2pts/sec = 120 pts/min)

You know your team is old when they could sign a 105 year old golfer who has been dead for 35 years to get younger and more athletic.

I was irked when Bobby Jones was drafted a couple years ago by the Sixers - wasn't that the year they drafted Rodney Carney in the first round? Plus already playing Andre Iguodala at the SF. He seemed like a perfect guy to pick up late in the round - defense first, pretty good size. Hell, maybe he'll get dropped by the Nuggets after 10 days -- I don't find it hard to believe the Spurs wanted him before Richardson.
