Watched the Denver-Orlando game where Howard scored for Denver by mistake off a lob from Iverson. I was just wondering if a player throws up a lob and is behind the three point line and a defender and that defender only tips it and it goes in, does it count for two points or three points?

Nah, it's a two. The points always have to do with the last offensive player to touch it. In the case of a 3 point lob, that would be the lob receiver.

My point was the lob receiver doesn't touch it and it gets tipped in by the defender without the touching another offensive player. The last offensive player to touch it was the one throwing the lob who is behind the three point line.

Well, I'm pretty sure it would be a 3. It makes sense because the defensive player can't be credited with a basket and so it goes to the shooter who shot from 3.

Yeah, it's a 3 pointer, its just like a shot being partially blocked and going in the basket. It still counts.

Its a TWO pointer because the basket will be credit to the closest offensive player, not the last offensive player to touch the ball

the fact that the 3 point shot was altered means its a 2 pointer already.

Its a three pointer. Happened to Tim Duncan a couple years ago. Against the Cavs I think. Someone shot a three that was gonna be an airball, Timmy tried to catch it and it came off his hands and went it for three. Remember the postgame interview where Timmy used the R word (retarded). It is just like a Defender getting a piece of a three ball and it goin in.

It makes sence it counts as a 3. I'm sure some guys would exploit that rule with a close game and the other team needing a 3. They would just jump for the ball and block it and it would count as a 2. Game over

im almost positive its a three pointer. the defender partially blocking it doesnt affect anything. only if another offensive player touching it would make it a two pointer

It would be interesting if they made a rule change which scored three points for alley-oops thrown behind the three point line. I bet teams would be more willing to work the alley-oop into their playbook.
