Jeff McDonald: Bowen in mourning

Bruce Bowen did indeed show up at the Spurs' shootaround Monday morning. Given the way his beloved Dallas Cowboys had flopped in their playoff opener a day earlier, it really was 50-50 as to whether he'd feel like getting out of bed at all.

Not only was Bowen at practice, he didn't even show signs that he had stayed up all night crying. That's one thing he has on Terrell Owens.

Not once in Monday's media session did Bowen curse the name of Jessica Simpson, or a certain ill-fated quarterback's Mexico vacation. In that, we're beginning to question Bowen's credentials as a Cowboys fan.

Bowen, instead, chose to look at the Cowboys' faceplant against the New York Giants -- in a game Dallas basically just gave away in a hail of dropped passes, penalties and boneheaded moves -- as a chance to learn a life lesson.

"It's tough, especially with all the things they accomplished this year as a team," Bowen said. "They had things set up for them the right way. That's why it's very important that you pay attention to the little things."

Bowen can at least look on the bright side: His favorite team was in the NFL playoffs. That's more than you can say for Tim Duncan's favorite team (the, cough, Chicago Bears).

Here I thought we were going to learn some new facet of Bruce's relationship with 'Zo.

I guess Bowen's preseason pep talk didn't work after all.

Isn't it ironic that the Cowboys meltdown was so very Maverick-like - and for similar reasons:

Both teams had extremely talented rosters, but no skins on the wall. They talked all year as though THEY were the team to beat and how they were destined for the championship.

Both teams had players who became the signature voices of both "unreason" and "nacissism" for their teams - not because of their play - but because of their mouths (Patrick Crayton - Cowboys; Jason Terry - Mavericks)

Both teams raced out to an impressive regular season record and secured the top seed only to lose in the 1st round to an inferior opponent.

Both teams achieved an unprecedented feat. Never before had a top seed in the NFC lost to a lower round seed in the NFC playoff under the current format. NFC top conference seed had previously amassed a 17-0 record since 1990. The Mavs were the NBA's first No. 1 seed to lose to an 8th seed under the current 7-game, 1st round playoff format

Both teams head coaches made sudden, unexplained lineup changes at the outset of their first playoff game. (Cowboys benching Julius Jones in favor of Marion Barber as a starter at RB; Mavs benching Erick Dampier in favor of Devin George)

Both coaches (Wade Phillips and Avery Johnson) gave their teams time off prior to the playoffs. Thereby giving them time to "dial bacK" their intensity, only to have trouble "dialing it back up" for playoff competition.

Both coaches got outcoached by the opposing coach.

Didn't Jerry Jones say, when they were in SA, that he wanted to drag whatever the Spurs had been in with the Cowboys? Hmm? Well they started off good, but looks like it didn't last through the whole season. Next time Cowboys should just stay in SA and play the whole season here.

Except that without Barber the game would have been a lot worse.
