Artisan's Alley Fire (http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/metro/stories/MYSA011508.artisanfire.EN.27eb39a9.html)

I saw this on the news last night, and can't get much more new today other than it appears to have started in a store called "Furr Kidds" and that Bin 555 had to be evacuated.

Does anyone know how much damage, if any, was done to the shops?

No official numbers had been released as of about an hour or so ago. If there's no update on the noon shows and stories, I'll try to find out more when I go into work in a few hours.

My mom called me last night to tell me to turn to KSAT cus they were showing it. We love going there, she is the only person I know who really appreciates that place like I do, and vice versa. Hopefully it was contained to one side like they said on the news last night.

I drove by there this morning and saw that the east side of the complex (the side closest to 281) appears to be in pretty good shape. I had heard -- but don't know for a fact -- that there was no structural damage to Bin 555, which would be consistent with that.

From what I could tell on TV last night, it was Auntie Annie's that was on fire. I could be wrong but that's what it looked like. Too bad, they have really good food there. Hopefully everyone involved had insurance and they can rebuild.

That was the report we had last night when I wrote the story, but I'm guessing with daylight and some reporters on scene, that assessment changed because I found my story updated with the morning info.

An E-N blog says that the fire only affected 3 shops and didn't mention Apple Annie's.

It seems a bit odd to feel somewhat relieved that certain businesses were unaffected when there are at least 3 that were pretty much decimated.

It really is amazing that a huge fire could happen and only affect 3 shops when all the shops are in such close proximity of each other. I'm glad it's sounding like Apple Annie's is okay; it's one of my favorite places to do lunch with the ladies!

Last night they said it was Bin 555 which is on the opposite end from Apple Annie's. I would have thought that whole place would have gone up in flames quickly with all the wooden structures and decking. Funny, we were just talking about The Lodge and Bin 555.

The owner of the Shops at Artisans Alley on Bitters Road is working with shop owners today to get several shops not damaged by fire reopened tomorrow.

Owner Carolyn Coyne said six shops were damaged by the fire that roared through the center Tuesday night. Three of them were extensively damaged -- FurKids, where the fire reportedly started, Baby Me and Hacienda Gallery. Three other stores were also damaged: Tuscany, Mirasol and CSI.

Coyne said investigators told her they wouldn't know what caused the fire until later today.

Shop owners were milling around the property Wednesday morning, examining at the damage. Pat McGhee, one of the owners of the Back Alley Antiques store, said, "It was unbelievable. It was like walking into a nightmare."

The owners said they were thankful no one was hurt in the fire, and most said they were confident that the damaged shops will be rebuilt.

Coyne steered customers to the center's Web site, www.artisansalley.com, which will post updates on the fire and when stores will reopen.

The Shops at Artisans Alley is located at 555 W. Bitters Road in the Hill Country Village on the city's North side. The property has 20 mom-and-pop stores and two restaurants.

I meant to say Apple Annie's, not Auntie Annie's. Isn't that a pretzel place? Maybe that means I should go to the mall and get one :lol

I am glad the restaurant is OK if that's the case. And again, hopefully everyone has insurance and all won't be completely lost.

I thought the exact same thing. I had never heard of Bin 555 until the Valentine thread, so I looked it up and thought to myself "Self....it's been a long time since we've been to Artisan's Alley" and made a mental note to go some weekend soon and browse thru the shops.

I haven't spoken to any of the guys from the FD, I would think (and hope )that the fire depts that responded got in defensive mode and kept the fire from spreading. Thank goodness that no one was injured and I do hope that the stores that were destroyed can be rebuilt.

:lol at the Nazr story
If you have ever been in there, you know how funny it was to see Nazr amidst the ladies-that-lunch and the blue hairs. He did not even fit through the doorway; he had to duck!
