Prolly be about the time we move back to Austin (if we can convince anyone to buy the house in McKinney). It'll be put to good use, trust me, especially since the stock option we thought would pay for the move evaporated over the last two weeks.

do you still get it if you owe the government money?

it has nothing to do with what you owe or what they owe you with taxes. This is a seperate thing

it has nothing to do with your tax return, it's a seperate rebate. The only reason it is tied in with the IRS is because they are using your 2007 tax information to see if you quialify, which about 95% of us all do because we are probably not billionaires or very poor (those poor don't file taxes and wont get a check because of that). It's a check you will get in the mail for $800

Tax rebates: All sides agree that tax rebate checks _ up to $500 for individuals and more for married couples and people with children _ would be in any final stimulus measure. The White House was pushing for even higher rebates. The rebates are likely to be limited to individuals with incomes less than $85,000 and couples earning $110,000 or less. Democrats want to extend the rebates to people who work but make too little to have to pay income taxes.

Seriously, and it would have been nice of them to let me know about it instead of all of a sudden finding out that I now have $4725 of untaxed "income" to deal with on this return. I'm still not sure how they expected me to be able to save up for that while making $800/mo after taxes during my AmeriCorps term ...

When I wrote my original post, I was basing my info off of the same source Shelly mentioned and was going by the $110,000 cap. But if it's $300,000 then I'm still in the running. In today's paper there is an article that I just skimmed, but it seemed to suggest that it might be done differently. From the bottom up.... They might not tax any income for the first $8,000 (single) or 16K (married) which would mean anyone not making enough to pay taxes would not get the rebate. I didn't get to read the artice closely but it did say the details had not been decided yet. So I suppose it's any one's guess at this point.

Stimulus Plan: What's In and What's Out
Topics:Economy (Global) | Economy (U.S.) | Taxes | White House | Congress | Politics & Government
Companies:Fannie Mae | Freddie Mac
By AP | 24 Jan 2008 | 01:49 PM ET
Font size:

Congressional leaders have a tentative deal for a bipartisan economic stimulus package that could move swiftly through Congress.

WHAT'S IN

* Tax rebates: Individuals who pay income taxes would get up to $600, working couples $1,200 and those with children an additional $300 per child under the agreement. Workers who make at least $3,000 but don't pay taxes would get $300 rebates.
* Business tax write-offs: Spurring business investments with so-called bonus depreciation and more generous expensing rules.
* Housing rescue: Allowing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to buy loans larger than $417,000.

WHAT'S OUT

* Permanent tax cuts: Republicans conceded that their top priority would have to be left out.
* Unemployment insurance: Democrats wanted to extend benefits past 26 weeks.
* Food stamps: A boost for benefits.
* Medicaid: Democrats gave up on including Medicaid payments to states.
* Low-income heating subsidies: Democrats are surrendering the fight to include them.
* Infrastructure spending: Spending on transportation or repair projects already under way is off the table.
* Republicans' proposal to allow businesses suffering losses now to reclaim taxes previously paid, appeared likely to be dropped because of its high cost.

if they actually wanted Americans to save money right away they would cut the gas tax, and put this money towards lowering the gas prices overnight and keep them low for 6 monthes to a year (like $1.50 a gallon). We could start saving tomorrow, unlike June with this plan, and they would save millions on postage and the manpower to send out these checks.

But it's an election year, and although this is a better plan, they would never do it.

Shelly
01-24-2008, 02:30 PM
Personally, I'd rather they keep the rebate money and lower payroll taxes and let us keep more of our hard earned money!

Deal Completed for Tax Rebates in June

By ANDREW TAYLOR – 59 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congressional leaders completed a deal Thursday with the White House on an economic stimulus package that would give most tax filers refunds of $600 to $1,200, and more if they have children.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican Leader John Boehner scheduled a news conference for 1:30 p.m. EST to announce the $150 billion package, hammered out in a week of intense negotiations with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

"We are pleased that the negotiators have been able to reach an agreement on an economic growth package," White House press secretary Dana Perino said Thursday afternoon. She said Bush would make a statement about the deal later in the day.

Congressional aides, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced, said they hope the checks could go out as early as June.

Individuals who pay income taxes would get up to $600, working couples $1,200 and those couples with children an additional $300 per child under the agreement. Workers who make at least $3,000 but don't pay taxes would get $300 rebates.

The rebate part of the plan would cost about $100 billion, aides said. The package also includes close to $50 billion in business tax cuts.

The package would allow businesses to immediately write off 50 percent of purchases of plants and other capital equipment and permit small businesses to write off additional purchases of equipment. A Republican-written provision to allow businesses suffering losses now to reclaim taxes previously paid was dropped.

Pelosi, D-Calif., agreed to drop increases in food stamp and unemployment benefits during a Wednesday meeting in exchange for gaining rebates of at least $300 for almost everyone earning a paycheck, including low-income earners who make too little to pay income taxes.

The rebates would phase out gradually for individuals whose income exceeds $75,000 and couples with incomes above $150,000, aides said. Individuals with incomes up to $87,000 and couples up to $174,000 would get partial rebates. The caps rise higher for individuals and couples with children.

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., scheduled a meeting of the Senate Finance Committee for next week to consider the stimulus package.

"The Senate will want to speak, as well," Baucus said, adding that he and Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, the panel's senior Republican, had "agreed to work together, move quickly, and mark up economic stimulus legislation next week."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the goal is to send the package to the White House by Feb. 15 for President Bush's signature

Bush has supported larger rebates of $800-$1,600, but his plan would have left out 30 million working households who earn paychecks but don't make enough to pay income tax, according to calculations by the Urban Institute-Brookings Institution Tax Policy Center. An additional 19 million households would receive only partial rebates under Bush's initial proposal.

To address the mortgage crisis, the package also raises the limits on Federal Housing Administration loans and home mortgages that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac can purchase to as high as $725,000 in high-cost areas. Those are considerable boosts over the current FHA limit of $362,000 and the $417,000 cap for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac's loan purchases.

After a key Wednesday night meeting in which the parameters of an agreement were reached, Pelosi and Boehner spoke again Thursday to cement the accord.

In the talks, Pelosi pressed to make sure tax relief would find its way into the hands of lower-income earners while Boehner pushed to include upper middle-class couples, according to congressional aides.

The emerging package was already drawing fire from liberal activists and labor unions upset that proposals to extend unemployment insurance and boost food stamps had been dropped. Many Democratic lawmakers had assumed those proposals would make it into the package, and critics of the deal said those ideas could pump money into the economy more quickly than tax rebate checks that won't be delivered until June.

Democrats wanted to extend unemployment benefits for people whose 26 weeks of benefits have run out, but Republicans resisted.

Conservative Republicans, meanwhile, were likely to be restless over tax rebates going to those without income tax liability.

Democratic aides said greater GOP flexibility over giving relief to poor families with children — who would not have been eligible under Bush's original tax rebate proposal — was the catalyst that moved the talks forward.

The right thing to do would be to give that $300 to your kids. But you'll probably end up spending it on them anyway so. . .

Actually the other day I was talking to my mom on the phone asking for some money and she said some remark about me always nickel and diming her. I don't remember exactly what I said but it was something like "You should've anticipated this day would come before you decided to have a kid."

And then she said back "I know, that's why I only had one."

According to the E-N, it's adjusted gross income. That's your income that you actually pay taxes on, after you directly subtract all pre-tax deductions like medical and 401(k) and your itemized deductions. Looks like I'm in. :toast

it still has to be voted on by congress, but seeing as this was agreed upon by the leaders of both parties in congress, they think it will pass with flying colors. I think there was only one Representative that was opposed to it.

I think it's more rediculous that the Senate is trying to make it so seniors on Social Security get them as well. Not only are most of them sucking this country dry of Social Security money they feel they are entitled to, but now they will get $600 so they can just sit on it until they die. I know it's harsh of me to say, but studies have shown that most seniors saves 35-45% of their social security (why!?), they take this money because they can. There is no stipulation as to who can get social security. If a guy made $1,000,000 a year for 35 years, he still claims his SS, and now because he doen't claim any income other than intrest income, he can get $600. That is bullshit, that is why our country will have a forever largening (if thats a word) national debt- because we as Americans feel a sense on entitlement and we want to pass on resposibility to others. It's in all of us; I'm 24 and am pissed that I pay social security, yet I will never see any money back from it and my country and employer expects me to open an IRA or manage a 401k, when we have people very well off taking money from SS for no other reason than "well I paid into it so I deserve it" Well if that is the case, than my generation is going to have a giant gripe when we hit our 60s. The baby boomers like to call my generation irresponsible, but these are the people that signed AR mortgages, and people that didn't save for retirement, not us. We need to start taking more responsibility and learn from prior generations' mistakes. Ok I'm done.

end rant

but I will seriously wanna kill someone if seniors get this rebate check because it will just further the truth that it is nothing more than a political move to make people feel that our goverment is working for us during an election year (b/c seniors hold a ton of voting power).

but atleast I'll get golf clubs, and I can enjoy them for a couple year until China comes and takes over our country overnight

OMFG ... those people paid into Social Security their entire lives.

so does everyone, and come 2017, there will be nothing left of it. I pay into it because I don't have a choice, but I won't see a dime of it, the government wants me to set up my own retirement as well as fund others who didn't bother to do it themselves when they where my age. I just fell sorry for the people that are 40 something and will have paid into it since they were 16, and won't get a dime. You think we have problems now....ha... wait untill social security runs out and we find that nobody bothered to set aside money for retirement...talk about a recession

So I thought I'd bump this to break the news, I did my taxes this weekend, and the $600 they sent you last spring is just your tax return early. My return was $600 less just because I answered 'yes' to having accepted a stimulus check

they just gave you money early they normally would have just sat on and given back to you this year. But they lied and didn't tell you where the money was coming from. They made it sound as if they were just handed everyone $600 and go spend it on stuff you didn't need. If they would have told you what it really was (an advance) people would have saved it and not spent it. If they were straight with you it wouldn't have served it's purpose.

This is kind of a good thing though. Putting that kind of money into circulation would be terrible for our future, which it looks like I said in this thread's original days

This is classic election year bullshit. They tried to make themselves look good for the election run, and pass the bad news onto the politicians who are just starting their terms in 2009.
