There aren't many coaches better than Pop...there's Phil Jackson, and then after that there is no one that gurantees we would have won an NBA title.

There isn't a better coach and GM in the NBA.

There are only 3 active coaches in the NBA that have won a title...Larry Brown, Rudy T, and Pop.

Pop is as a good of a coach as those other two and he is a much better GM and team exec.

Now I do think it was possible to win more titles with Duncan and Robinson but I am not sure we could have gotten anyone else that would have done it.

I simply think that if Pop was a better coach on offense we could have done it.

And I don't think there's another guy anywhere that could have done in a smalll market what Pop has done as a GM...

Now, since we couldn't afford or get Phil Jackson to coach this team...Pop is as good as it gets.

But that doesn't excuse him from doing things that are obviously stupid that even fans can see...

Like, not using Steve Kerr when we blow leads in the playoffs.

Like mysteriously benching Robert Horry when he has been playing well...and us losing because of it.

Like mysteriously changing the rotation in a big game and us also losing or struggling to win because of it.

I bitch about Pop but I am not one of the ones who wants him to be fired...when he leaves this team the run of success it has had with him at the controls will end also...

I bitch about Pop, but that doesn't mean I want him fired. I just want him to not do blatantly stupid stuff with the offense while on his doomed quest to hold another NBA team scoreless.

The one criticism that is accurate of Pop, something that if he was better at would have resulted in more NBA titles, is that he doesn't care enough about offense and tends to make bad decisions with regards to the offense...he just doesn't think it's important. He's wrong, it is important. This doesn't mean I think he should be fired, or that anyone could do a better job than he has done, it's just an obvious flaw he has as a coach that is impossible to overlook.

I agree.

For those that hate Pop, who would you rather have? You've got to pick an available coach who would realistically come to San Antonio. I can't think of anyone I'd rather have that's available.

Come on, Brodels. if we can understand ducks, we can understand tonillo. :)

To all your points, there are wide, heated divergences of opinion.

"cursiosity': yes, several people think 2 rings is not enough with Tim/Drob under Pop.

The Barry question has been asked a lot. Brown, Bowen, Barry are very different players. But the worst is that Pop seems unable to sit the one(s) who is having a bad night (Bruce) to play those aren't.

I for one don't buy this BS that Manu can't play more minutes than he does. Last night, he was the most effective Spur, kept Spurs in the game by himself with a full stat line, while everybody else slept, and, shudder at the horror, played 34 minutes, and was still going strong in crunch time, but did not play enough in the 4th qtr.

My 'Monday-morning" crunch-minutes team last night:

Beno, Manu, Brent, Robert, Rasho. Tim and Tony and Bruce were killing us, so they spectate (and, Pop, each would fucking fully understand and accept why they sit).

Come on, Pop, it's games like last night where YOU have to find a way to win it anyway.

I 'll still love Pop even if (shudder) he brings Baloney to town. He is the only coach I could ever find it in my heart to forgive for that montrosity.
