Here's SG/PG that has fallen out of our ol' pal PJ Carleissimo's rotation in Seattle.
Get him.
Now.

Um, our current backup PG is Jaques Vaughn.
West plays behind E. Watson and L. Ridnour... two starting-quality PGs.
Put the hot dog down.

Lemme get this straight... a young backup PG that can pass and shoot?
Maybe you guys are right... let's stick with the 90-year-old dynamo Jaques Vaughn.
I bet we could get Vaughn cheap and sell PJ on someone he is familiar with off our bench.

West has some health troubles this year and that's why he doesn't play a lot in Seattle. I'm not sure that Seattle is ready to trade him while they haven't been able to really evaluate him.

Beno Udrih.

TheProfessor
01-25-2008, 01:18 PM
So you want a backup PG that's going to steal touches from Manu off the bench and jack up shots? Jacques rarely turns the ball over, plays good D, and hits open jumpers. He's a good fit for this team. You might want something flashier, but the Spurs knew what they were doing when they signed him.

West plays behind E. Watson and L. Ridnour... two starting-quality PGs.
If you think Ridnour is better than Delonte West. You should just hope the Spurs trade for Ridnour instead. He's the one that the Sonics have been trying to deal for the last year.
The only PG I'd want from Seattle is Watson though. DE-FENSE.

If the Sonics want to give away West, this actually wouldn't be a bad idea. Especially if there's a chance that Parker's ankle never gets quite right.
That said, the Sonics probably value West more than Ridnour and Watson once you consider the contracts of all three.

Vaughn doesn't hit open jumpers.
Last year, Jacque hit 46.6% of his long two's. He is actually far worse around the basket. If you just want to talk about shooting percentage, and since scoring averages are pretty unreliable compared with actually value to a team (the Spurs should have at least taught you that by now), some PG's with worse TS%'s and turnover ratios are Brevin Knight, Travis Diener, Jason Hart, Jannero Pargo, Chris Duhon, Sebastian Telfair, Luke Ridnour, etc. It goes on.
But a lot of this is subjective; stats are never going to reveal everything. My question is, where else do we get a PG who can pressure the ball up the court, play above average defense, hit open jumpers at a good clip, all while not getting in the way of our stars (particularly Manu), and for the vet min. Jacque's a good deal. That said, I would have liked to have had Darius Washington around as an offensive spark-plug 3rd PG.

Smush Parker. Steve Francis. Beno....it's pointless to go on.
Chris Quinn is Jason Williams' backup in Miami. Mike James is Rafer Alston's backup in Houston.
Get your facts straight, jack@ss.
Still waiting.
P.S.
Jan 24 West did not play Wednesday as he appears to be the odd man out in coach P.J. Carlesimo's shortened rotation. Carlesimo is limiting the rotation to nine or 10 players. With two point guards (Luke Ridnour, Earl Watson) already playing, there is little room left for West.

As long as Vaughn doesn't shoot anything other than a wide open mid range jumper and facilitates ball movement within the offense he's the ideal backup PG for the Spurs. You can't just look at the player from a stats or one on one matchup perspective, you have to look at what their role is for their team. Vaughn's role is not to put up numbers, his role is to facilitate ball movement with the 2nd unit to set up Manu, Udoka, Barry, etc. On defense he's exactly what Pop wants at the PG position for the 2nd unit. Face it, he's the backup PG for this season and more than likely next as well. Pop loves the guy because he plays his role fairly consistently and doesn't take away touches from the scorers.

On shots between 15 to 18 feet, Vaughn has hit a very good percentage as a Spur. In fact, he might hit those shots at a higher percentage than anyone on the team.
I'm not a big Vaughn fan overall because I think his defense is overrated and sometimes he doesn't pass quickly enough. However, I dislike him because he doesn't hit jumpers. That's just inaccurate.
And while I'm not a huge Vaughn fan, for what they are paying him he's better than anyone else the Spurs could get. You could try to find a young second round pick or something but that player isn't going to bring Vaughn's leadership or his willingness to accept his role.
It's fine to be a Vaughn playa hata, Ghost, but at least hate him for valid reasons.

I like West. He's got some moxie and is a good shooter. Sure, he has a shoot first mentality, but the Spurs could do worse than this kid as a combo guard on a rookie contract.
If he really is outbound from Seattle, I see no reason why the Spurs shouldn't make a run at him.

West was very good with Boston. I saw a lot of the games and he'll pretty much give you a little bit of everything. He hits open shots, passes the ball, sees the court well, rebounds, steals errant passes, blocks the shots of big men and shoots it well from the free throw line.

Vaughn's job is to come in and be a steady hand when Parker sits for his few minutes of rest. It is not his job to score 20 points a game. Anyways, we get it, your the CEO of the I HATE JACQUE VAUGHN club. But who cares about what you think.
Ricky Davis came in off the bench to relieve Williams in the Miami game, so that makes him the back up point guard. Ricky Davis sucks worse than Vaughn does, so there.

Well said! Vaughn understands his role perfectly. Spurs don't need a chucker that doesn't know the difference between a good shot and a bad one. All a chucker will do is take away shots from our big 3 and other high percentage open corner 3's from our wings Udoka/ Bowen/ Finley. I do agree though that Vaughn is sometimes telepathic with his passing and his defense is a tad overrated. All in all for his price and how he understands his role. Vaughn is a bargain. You can't find a better fit for the price. Spurs need a big man in the middle if anything.
