January 25, 2008

The Spurs announced on Friday that a MRI had revealed that Brent Barry suffered a grade II strain of the medial head of his gastrocnemius muscle in his left calf. The injury occurred during the third quarter of the Spurs' game in Miami on Thursday.

Barry is expected to miss three to four weeks.

Barry had previously torn the plantaris muscle in his left calf on Dec. 26 against Chicago. He missed nine games due to the injury.

So it's a new injury? I'm sure it's somehow related.

A month sounds about right. Maybe five weeks. A target return of around March 1 makes sense.

He shouldn't have come back so soon from his first injury. The Spurs need him at full strength

Good thing that it wasn't the same muscle

Probably over worked the area he injured because of his old injury.

I've had this very same injury before and about all you can do for it is rest it and then come back slow. When I came off the IR, on the advice of a physical therapist I know, I wore one of those synthetic sock/sleeves to hold the calf muscle tight when I ran. It helped.

Bad news is that you lose some of your giddy-up as you work your way back, so even if it heals in 5 weeks I'd bet it's at least 8 weeks before Barry's able to go 100%. Of course I didn't have NBA trainers getting me back on track so Barry's heal time will probably be quicker.

Maybe five weeks. :madrun

That's 45 seconds I'll never get back. :depressed

When players and teams get old it's just a never-ending injury parade.

That's the cost for keeping too many old players

Barry just got back in the flow of things...his recent game against Lakers was awesome. Too bad that he got an injury again...just when things were looking up...

Seems like we just can't shake the injury bug. Hopefully, Barry can recover quickly and finish the season injury free. He has become a major part of our rotation and we will need him for the playoffs.

What was our record with Bones out?

I don't think injuries have a lot to do with being older. Freak injuries happen to all ages. Spurs have just had some bad luck in the injury department this year. Better now, than at playoff time.

Jeff McDonald: Barry out, and what of Richardson?
The news Friday that Brent Barry will miss the next three-to-four weeks with a strained muscle in his left calf gives rise to an interesting conundrum in Spursland.

What happens to Jeremy Richardson?

Richardson, originally signed to help with depth on the wing with Barry out earlier this month, is in the middle of his second 10-day contract with the Spurs. The team can't sign him to another one. When his latest 10-day expires on Wednesday, the only way to keep Richardson around is to sign him for the rest of the season.

Richardson has played in four games during his recent call-up from the Developmental League, and even started one. Needless to say, however, there isn't really a body of work on which to judge Richardson's worth as a permanent option.

Another option: The Spurs could dip back into the Developmental League pool for a more temporary replacement, possibly re-signing a DerMarr Johnson or a Keith Langford or someone of that nature.

Stay tuned ...

This sucks. Good thing Udoka was playing well and should continue to get more minutes now.

It won't matter who the Spurs sign (should they sign anyone) they won't see playing time outside of garbage minutes or a blowout situation.

Older players sustain more injuries.

Tony certainly isn't old, yet bother by the bone spurs in his foot. Manu really can't be called old, and yet a freak injury to, of all things, a finger on his shooting hand. Even if Duncan is considered old, his injury was from some freakish knee to knee collision and the ensuing fall to the floor. Bowen, being one of the real elders on the team, never seems to suffer from injury.

So I'm not so sure age has much to do with it. I mean, if these guys were bordering on 50 or so, I might say yeah. However, a few years back, when I was 57 or 58 and was working with mostly 17 - 22 year olds, in a pretty physical environment, and I could out do 90% of them. A few of them suffered strains and such. I never did. I think if you are in shape to do anything you are as likely to get injured as a young man as you are an older one.
