Chris Paul getting Stockton

It's a seemingly untouchable record. 15,806 career assists. Guys like Kidd and Nash don't have a chance. And, obviously it's way too early to tell with Chris Paul. But, in your opinion, is Stockton's career assists record out of reach? Could Chris Paul get there? He did start a couple years earlier than Stockton and played starter minutes already. Here's what would need to happen: Paul needs to play another 15 years until he's about 37-38, remain healthy enough to play about 80 games each of those seasons, and average about 12 assists per game along the way to give him a shot at it. Or, play til he's about 40 averaging about 10 assists per game. Possible? What do you think?

Really puts that record into perspective. And, how the hell did Stockton play for so dam long?

Stockton missed 22 games in 19 years. 18 games one season, 4 games another season. All 17 other seasons, he played in every single regular season game.

Paul has had some injury mishaps already. While I think he's talented enough, it's not just talent. You have to have great fortune to play that many games in that long of a career, never even minding the high level of play.

Not Stockton's fault. The guy was one of the greatest clutch shooters I've ever seen. He hit the game-winner at the buzzer to send Utah to the Finals in '97. In '99 he hit the three to save Utah from first round elimination in Sacramento in game 4. In '98 he hit the three to put Utah up 3 with 39 seconds remaining in game 6, and would have won the title if choking-ass Malone hadn't coughed the ball up to Jordan on Utah's next possession.

I can only think of three: Karl Malone, John Stockton, and Charles Barkley. I don't think Patrick Ewing would have won any either way. And, Clyde Drexler and Gary Payton won rings.
