My laptop is suddenly running like crap. Its taking forever to load and run anything. It is basically as if someone suddenly turned the clock back on it and made it extremely old.

My first instinict is bad ram. Is there any way I can go about self diagnosing this?

Do a ctrl-alt-del and kill any .exes that might be killing your cpu's speed. . .

Defragment the hard drive. . .

Could be any number of things really.

MannyIsGod
01-29-2008, 07:36 PM
I defrag on a regular basis. I'll check the CPU usage though.

MannyIsGod
01-29-2008, 07:48 PM
I'm going to wipe everything and restore it all to the default setting out of the factory using an image I have.

This will tell me if its software or not, right?

Does anyone know if thats just a bad sector on the HDD?

Man I've not worked with any of this shit in a LONG time so I'm clueless.

Do you have your installation CDs?

MannyIsGod
01-29-2008, 08:35 PM
No the stuff was on the 2nd partition of the hard drive. I think I made a backup image somewhere but really if it wasn't hardware that restore should have gone through fine. I'm fairly sure that the HDD is fucked.

Find a program to check your HD for bad sectors...there's plenty of good freeware-shareware-Mouseware out there that will do the job....

Don't flush it I have a USB HD adapter I can transfer your data on to DVD!

Don't forget if you use torrents there is a nasty (trj) out there that will knock out your HD and the NTLDR file. You have to do a compete wipe of the HD to use it again.

Re Installing windows is a band-aid at best. Your old data is still on the HD I can prove it with many different Data recover software out there.

Recuva
Get back my data
Recover my data

etc.... Those programs find the files you figured was gone. So your trj and virus is waiting for you in a music or data file.

One of my favorite infections is the one you get when you download an XP crack :lmao

Here you are looking for a crack file so you don't have to reinstall XP pro every 30 days. what better file to spread this infection?

When you install the file it reboots your pc and the next screen you get will read....

You must register your windows before you can log on error

Now your screwed the only way to get your data is with the adapter or slave your HD on to another pc.

I love the infection I think it's funny :lmao

The other one is not a joke! It's the NTLDR ERROR

your fucked if you get that one.

http://www.tburke.net/info/ntldr/ntldr_hacking_guide.htm

The only way to by-pass it you must put your XP disc in the ROM and when it says boot from CD you say yes.

and go into restore console mode.
and you have to do a series of dos commands.

restore\MBR.exe and others... but if your infected your NTLDR will not fix.

those commands are only for people with real software issues and are receiving errors.
If you have the infection you have no other options but to slave your hd or used the USB adapter and suck out the data.

If you drop your NoteBook you can damage a sector in the HD and you will have to replace it anyway. There is a laptop service place by the airport they only charge 240.00 to replace the HD with a 60 GB HD they have.

Algens wants 75.00 dollars to bust open your notebook.

Altex wants 125.00

Mr.notebook will do it for 20-40 dollars stay on the access road when your at I-10 and Wurzbach close by your cantone S A! :smokin

Keep in mind that pice does not include they retrive your data :wakeup

what Brand is your notebook? I will fix it for free if it's a DELL.

MannyIsGod
01-30-2008, 12:34 AM
I could give 2 shits about the data on there. I only use torrents from a private tracker so I"m 99% sure they're always clean.

I'm fairly sure at this point that its either a HDD problem, cable problem, or a motherboard problem which will probably just make me cry.

MannyIsGod
01-30-2008, 12:35 AM
How hard is changing a notebook hard drive? I'd imagine its easy as piss right? I'd just need to get a new one. Thanks for the 20gb offer but I'm thinking a larger one.

Find what brand your notebook is and you go to Utube and watch the video its like two screws and then you have to remove the HD caddy it's a tray the HD rest on while in the notebook.
here is a video on how easy it is! :smokin

http://video.google.com/videosearch?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=s&hl=en&q=hard+drive+replace+notebook&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wv

I had to go look at a video on how to replace a 8100 DELL notebook LCD screen, I found a perfect DELL Inspiron in the dumpster. so I wanted to go to eBay to find another 8100 and try and replace the cover/screen.

I saw how easy it was to disassemble a DELL Notebook and reassemble it from a Google video I saw.

I practiced on a Notebook I got off eBay for 75.00 dollars it had no screen.
I replaced a Video card on it I took off the 8100 I found in the dumpster and sold the notebook for 225.00 to Crazyone.

The rest is history. After you replace the HD you will be helping others and so on.

DannyT has many HDs and a flat screen LCD for sale.

That is not true. My dad was a Heroin addict from Vietnam I was lucky to see The Munsters on our neighbor's 13 TV as long as I had a cigarette I stole from my mother.

In 1979 I was getting high outside the Disco talking about the Judas Priest tickets I got for letting The DJ from Kiss/Kmac radio station touch my package the night before.

Back in 1986 I had a DJ service called spin masters and I painted houses to make extra money to buy speed (the real shit) and go see Ratt,Wasp,Saxxon and other 80s bands touring Texas.

1996 I was was just another long haired radio caller to sports radio working at the base and drinking beer and collecting toys and sports cards off eBay to avoid having sex with a very ugly woman at the time.

That is when i took my Infected pc to Help me computers off Austin hwy and they Charged me 50.00 dollars an hour to tell me two hours later they are not sure yet they think i have a virus.

I owe them 107.00 to get back my PC.

I only paid a100.00 for the whole 333 mhz HP why would I pay more to fix it than getting another PC?

So I went to best buy got a WD hd and reinstalled windows for 40.00 dollars.

That is when I decided to see why the Help me computers wanted 50.00 dollars an hour.

I wanted to see what was so hard!

You don't have to be born with a keyboard in your crib to do half the shit I do if you have Google. Most people just don't want to ask questions they might feel like a idiot? I once asked how to post a picture in my post and I felt smart after I figured it out.

Actually I felt like a 5th grader for about 5 minutes :lol

Acer Aspire 5100.

I reinstalled windows - just threw XP Pro on there instead of Media Center. I'm downloading drivers right now and I'll try to figure out if the performance has improved. So far its like night and day but with nothing running on it its kinda hard to tell.

Although really just booting up was an ordeal last night, so maybe this fixed it. I don't know.

dp a dosk check it will tell you if you have bad sectors and try to fix them...im glad you reloaded xp cause thats something you should try before you buy anything and if i was you before i went and got a 200bib drive i wold take mouse up on his offer and try out that hard drive he has to see if thats really your issue unless going to mouses house is the real issue....and if thats the case i understand....honestly i think you were just infected....what did you see when you opened up your task manager...and yes i know i said i was going post pictures and I forgot but i have a 23 inch flat if anyone is interested.

MannyIsGod

Reinstall looks like it fixed it. Nothing was running under the task manager. 98% CPU usage was system idle.

Its not running anything so I'm not sure how fixed it is, but with a bare XP pro install on there it seems to run fine. I hear the HDD going which is something that I didn't hear yesterday for whatever thats worth.

DannyT
01-30-2008, 11:54 AM
well hearing it is not always good....if its a grind clicking type you might what to start investing towards a replacement for that Jacque Vaughn hard drive you got in your hands now
run that check disk and after the 5th stage it will tell you how many bad sectors yo have...could just mean theres a portion of your disk that was hosed and thats where that data was written on that i was trying to access.... :wakeup

Mac's rarely have hardware issues.
:lol

They do here......

300 or so Macs and Powerbooks - at least three a week with hardware issues.

25,750 PC's and Notebooks (number could be 30k, only 25.7k are checking in) at least 10 a week with hardware issues. IBM compats are like Chevys and Fords the parts are cheap, everywhere, and easy to install.

Now if you want to talk OS....that's a different argument.

sabar
01-31-2008, 02:20 AM
Mac's rarely have hardware issues.Hardware in an Apple is the same as the hardware in a PC. It's also the same as the hardware in a DVR and an Xbox360. No reason a Mac's HDD would be more stable. Apple contracts their hardware production to companies like Asus.

A truer statement would be that Mac's rarely have software issues. Windows will continue to have problems until Microsoft finally stops upgrading the same piece of software and starts from scratch. It's like adding a new room to a house with a shaky foundation.

grindmouse

DannyT how much is the 23 inch flat screen?

Manny if your ever at a Torrent site get a program called Microscope 2000.

you put the cd and it has it's own operating system it will check all the parts to the PC and tell you whats wrong. It will do RAM and HD and all kinds of tests.

Even if your HD is dead.

I hate this fucking laptop. I'm tempted to just go buy a new one but I can be a cheap motherfucker. I never did replace the hard drive and I would get occasional crashes that started becoming more and more frequent up until today when it won't even boot. I'm 95% sure its not the ram since I've removed it and run it one stick at a time and it the problem still persists so its either the board or the HDD. If its the board then the laptop is probably worthless and not worth fixing, right? If it the HDD then I'm sure I can fix it easy as pie.

I did find my original backup discs though, so I have those but now I keep getting a hard driver error when I try to boot it. I'm going to run that microscope program if I can find it I guess.

Oh, and Danny I need a new flatscreen since my other one died too. I'm down to one monitor and after using 2 for so long it fucking sucks. :lol

Or find out who makes the hard drive in your laptop and get the testing tools available for free from their website.

The first link actually has the diagnostic tools for all hard drive makers (Samsung/Seagate/Western Digital/Fujitsu/Hitachi/Maxtor/Quantum/IBM/ETC), and has memory diagnostic tools as well that you can use if somehow your hard drive actually passes.

I can't say what the issue is just yet, but you can never assume that, for example, two sticks of memory WOULDNT go bad at the same time.

Of course another thing to consider is that one stick went bad a long time ago when you first posted, and another went bad recently, which is a lot less coincidental.

Mouse, how can a virus afffect hardware?

It doesn't physically damage the hardware, but it can delete files such as the trojan he mentioned.

I see. So by knocking out the Hard Drive, he really meant the files in the hard drive?

I can't say what he meant, you'd have to ask him, but there is a trojan that will delete your NTLDR file which is necessary for loading Windows.

If you don't consider the HD or motherboard hardware then I apologize.

Another Virus disables the CPU fan or slows it down enough to over heat your chip. That sounds like hardware to me.

PM5k, its just the generic OEM RAM.

Mouse, I'll let you know. I have pretty much zero faith in getting this one running again so I"ll probably need something.

He's putting you down in one breath, and trying to sell you a laptop in another.

This is pretty simple, you get some new RAM and see if it will work. If it does you're good, if not it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get something new (If your warranty has expired, in some cases RAM has a limited lifetime warranty).

And the things is, I checked the specs and it's a pretty decent laptop, I wouldn't be so quick to write it off.

So where about do you live, what part of town?

Mouse, that Dell 1150 should have wireless built in, it doesn't need the PC card for the internet.

Damn, I thought since you went to OP that you lived a little closer.

My brother lives way the hell over there.

What you can do is go to Best Buy, they have a 1Gb stick for about thirty dollars with tax. You can buy one and if it works out well you can buy another.

I was going to offer you my 2X512MB sticks for 15.00 but you don't live as close as I thought.

What's the warranty situation with your laptop?

Warranty is done. I was going to plan on buying a 1gb stick sine they're so cheap so I'll probably do that soon. If that doesn't fix the issue the we can be sure its something on the board, right?

I could replace the CPU, but replacing a whole board just seems like more trouble than its worse.

If it gives you memory errors when using memtest with a brand new stick of RAM it might not be worth dealing with it anymore.

You'd probably be better off selling it to Mouse or on eBay/Craigslist.

I couldn't say without looking at it, but most likely a problem with either the motherboard (maybe a problem with the northbridge) or maybe a cooling problem.

Another motherboard would probably run you over 150.00 plus installation costs so it probably wouldn't be worth it.

What are the specs?

You'd probably be better of parting it out and or selling it on eBay and using that for a new(er) laptop.

Let us know how it goes, when were you planning on getting the memory?

The Mini PCI card is the wireless card attached to the board. This one it was taken out. When you buy the notebooks off eBay you have to make sure the cards are not removed.

here is the card.

All that is left is the screen and charger. The base plate board and lower case are sold. There is a 5100 selling for 125.00 on eBay

The laptop is dead. It works better after the new RAM (meaning it actually boots) but it still crashes often.

Mouse do you want it?

How much fool?

Does the RAM pass tests?

Mouse only uses DELL notebook parts. Go buy a mini PCI card off ebay (20.00) and get his 1150 out of the pawnshop for 160.00.

For 180.00 you will have laptop charger and 1,200.00 in software you can't lose.

I'm keeping the RAM. I'm going to go buy a new notebook next week and I'll either throw it in there or just put it in my mom's machine.

Send me a PM on what you think is fair for it though. You hooked me up with the tech support so just give me what you think is fair and its yours.
