Agent: Spurs to announce signing of Stoudamire this week
By Marc Stein
ESPN.com
Updated: January 30, 2008, 9:58 PM ET

Damon Stoudamire informed the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday that he will be signing with them later this week, according to his agent.

Aaron Goodwin told ESPN.com that Stoudamire, who will clear waivers and become a free agent Thursday at 10 p.m. ET after his buyout from the Memphis Grizzlies, has committed to join the Spurs after also considering the Phoenix Suns and the Toronto Raptors, with whom Stoudamire won NBA Rookie of the Year honors in the 1995-96 season.

Once he officially becomes a free agent, Stoudamire will join San Antonio for a pro-rated share of the $1.2 million veteran minimum. That computes to roughly $545,000 if Stoudamire spends the rest of the season with the defending champions.

It was not immediately clear if Stoudamire will be signed in time to play Thursday night in Phoenix against the Suns, but San Antonio definitely has an immediate need for reinforcements in the backcourt. Tony Parker has been ordered by Spurs coach Gregg Popovich to sit indefinitely to rest a heel injury that, according to Popovich, has reduced the reigning NBA Finals MVP to "60 or 70 percent [capacity] for about a month."

The Spurs' Big Three of Parker, Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan have all missed time with injuries during the first half of the season, contributing to an 11-13 slump since their 17-3 start that had dropped San Antonio to sixth in the West entering Wednesday's play. The Spurs have also lost the first two of nine games on their annual "Rodeo Road Trip," which has historically sparked their trademark second-half surge.

Stoudamire initially expressed strong interest in joining the Boston Celtics as a veteran counterpart to second-year playmaker Rajon Rondo, but it appears that the Celtics are banking on the future availability of Los Angeles Clippers guard Sam Cassell. It's widely expected that the Clippers will consent to buying out Cassell if they can't move him before the Feb. 21 trading deadline and Cassell remains close to this day with Celtics forward Kevin Garnett after their time together in Minnesota.

The Suns wanted Stoudamire -- who played collegiately in the area for Arizona -- as the reliable backup to Steve Nash they've been seeking for years. Stoudamire was also intrigued by the idea of playing behind Jose Calderon in a coming-full-circle return to the Raptors, who have been forced to look for a third point guard because of T.J. Ford's ongoing injury absence.

San Antonio will be hoping that Stoudamire's arrival will enable them to bring Parker back slowly, with the hope of getting him fully healed in time for the playoffs. The 34-year-old hasn't played in a game since Dec. 30, after Memphis made a commitment to give the bulk of its backcourt minutes to rookie Mike Conley and Spanish newcomer Juan Carlos Navarro.

I think its a good pick up and at a GREAT time. He will give Tony the chance to heal up. He's not terrible and may feel rejuvenated to play for a Ring. Do you remember how Pop had to tell the guys "We aren't making any trades, this is who we are going with." last year ? I'm sure he just hopes we can hang though this tough stretch. Be prepared folks, this may be our ugliest record going into the playoffs in many years.

Props to Stoudamire for picking the Spurs. It's hard to dislike a player who could have signed with a handful of teams and decided the Spurs were his best option.

Hopefully he can play tomorrow versus the Suns. In a perfect world, Stoudamire could wait, get in a few practices and then play in the Spurs' next game on Tuesday. However, the Spurs are too desperate and need point guard help right away.

So many questions, so little time for answers. The Spurs could just install a couple simple plays that would allow him to run point for about 10 to 15 minutes. I'm guessing it won't happen but Stoudamire has been around long enough that he should be able to figure out the basics pretty quickly.

Good to hear. I hope he gets a chance to play tomorrow but I bet they get some practices in during the 4 days off and be ready to go on Tuesday.

I'm surprised he didn't go to Phoenix or Boston but he'll get the playing time here with Parker out and should see plenty of minutes once Parker returns as well.

Stoudamire for the vet min is not a bad deal, considering who is available and what it would take to land them.

I mean, I can think of a ton of guys in the league I'd like to see running the Spurs' offense with TP out, but Stoudamire is the one who's available, at a price the Spurs can afford, and he apparently wants to join. You can't ask for much more than that.

Stoudamire to sign with Spurs

The opportunity for playing time and a recent injury to Tony Parker apparently tilted the scales in favor of San Antonio for former University of Arizona guard Damon Stoudamire.

Stoudamire will sign a pro-rated contract with the Spurs as early as Thursday, after two conversations with Suns general manager Steve Kerr within the past 24 hours led nowhere.

“We spoke to him. He understands what we had to offer and he felt San Antonio was the better opportunity,” Kerr said.

Memphis released Stoudamire on Monday and he cleared waivers Wednesday, freeing him to sign a with any team for the pro-rated veteran’s minimum salary of $1.2 million.

Many NBA observers thought he would end up in Boston but general manager Danny Ainge decided he didn’t want to mess with the chemistry of his league-leading Celtics.

Kerr said that with the trade deadline looming on Feb. 23, the Suns are not looking to make any changes, “although that’s a situation that changes daily.”

The Spurs remind me of some daredevil or trapeeze artist or tightrope walker. They stand at the edge of the tightrope, egging the crowd on, getting the crowd to throw tomatoes and hoot and holler at them. Each year it takes more of a swoon to get the conventional wisdom, the casual fans, and media to get to that point again, to write off the Spurs, this time finally for real (because they've been fooled so many times before).

Then the patient Spurs realize the moment is right at last, smile almost imperceptibly and nod as they take that first step across the tightrope. All eyes are on them now.

I think at this point, something was needed. With Stoudamire on the roster, there's not a huge hurry for Parker. He can rest up a bit and come back fresh. The Spurs may lose a few more than they would with a healthy Parker but they need to be able to have Parker, Ginobili and Duncan at full strength (or as close to it as possible) when the playoffs start. Signing Damon gives Parker the opportunity to get a little rest in now so that he's not playing hurt come playoff time.

At least that's what I think.

NBA: Spurs to sign guard Damon Stoudamire

Web Posted: 01/31/2008 11:32 AM CST

Mike Monroe
San Antonio Express-News

PHOENIX – The Spurs have lost three games in a row, but they scored an off-the-court victory on Wednesday when veteran point guard Damon Stoudamire decided he will sign with the Spurs as soon as he officially clears waivers on Thursday morning.

Several other top-tier teams, including the Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets and Toronto Raptors, had expressed interest Stoudamire, who on Monday negotiated a buyout of the remaining two years of his contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Stoudamire won’t be eligible to sign with the Spurs until Thursday morning, but his agent, Aaron Goodwin, confirmed that he will sign with the Spurs. He figures to move immediately into the team’s playing rotation because of the injury that has sidelined starting point guard Tony Parker, who underwent an MRI exam in San Antonio on Wednesday. Results of the exam on Parker’s left heel and ankle won’t be known until Thursday.

Parker and Jacque Vaughn were the only true point guards on the Spurs roster. Manu Ginobili and Brent Barry both put in some time at point guard when Parker missed four games in December, but Barry is expected to be out another three to four weeks with a strained muscle in his left calf.

Now 34, Stoudamire requested that the Grizzlies work out a buyout of his deal when he dropped behind rookie Mike Conley and second-year man Kyle Lowry on new coach Marc Iavaroni’s point-guard rotation. He played in 29 games this season, averaging 7.3 points.

The career 40.8 percent shooter is making 38.3 percent of his 3-pointers this season and 39.7 overall. He has been in the league since 1995 and has a career scoring average of 13.8.

The seventh pick of the 1995 draft, Stoudamire played his first two-plus seasons with the Toronto Raptors, averaging 20.2 points in 1995-96. He played seven full seasons in Portland before being traded to Memphis in the summer of 2005.

He suffered a knee injury in his first season in Memphis and played only 27 games. He appeared in 62 games last season, averaging 7.5 points, on 39.1 percent shooting, and 33.7 percent 3-point shooting.

Mike Monroe: Getting the point
I asked Mike D'Antoni yesterday if he thought Damon Stoudamire might be able to help the Spurs, and his response was "Yeah, if we don' t get him first."

I think that was his way of saying he hoped Stoudamire would not end up in silver and black to help bridge the gap at point guard while Tony Parker gives his sore left ankle and heel time to simmer down.

He probably feels even more strongly about it, now that we know Parker will miss at least the next seven Spurs games: tonight's game and the six that follow on the rodeo road trip that precedes All-Star weekend.

Coaches and GMs never want to see their competition improve, which is why both the Spurs and Suns have been tracking the rumors about Jason Kidd. Neither team wants to see Kidd in Dallas, which is reason enough for Mark Cuban to hope he can pull off the rumored three-way deal involving the Mavs, Nets and Portland Trail Blazers.

For the same reason, Cuban probably would have preferred seeing Stoudamire sign with Toronto.

In the air-tight race in the Western Conference, a few losses will make a big difference in playoff seeding. If Stoudamire can help the Spurs win two or three more games during Parker's convalescence, he will have been well worth the money the club will play to get him.

In fact, the league will help the Spurs pay for him, under a little-known section of the collective bargaining agreement designed to encourage teams to sign veteran players like Stoudamire when they are free agents. Players of three or more years of service (and Stoudamire has 13 years) who sign one-year minimum deals cost teams only what a two-year player on a minimum contract gets, $770,670. The league pays the player the difference, and the team is charged only the two-year minimum for salary cap and luxury tax purposes.

In essence, the Spurs' salary outlay this season hardly increased when they let Jeremy Richardson go and signed Stoudamire.

Not as much irrelevant on offense as weak on defense.

Aaron Goodwin told ESPN.com that Stoudamire, who will clear waivers and become a free agent Thursday at 10 p.m. ET after his buyout from the Memphis Grizzlies, has committed to join the Spurs after also considering the Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors, with whom Stoudamire won NBA Rookie of the Year honors in the 1995-96 season.
