Spurs-Suns Preview
By BRETT HUSTON, STATS Writer

During their decade-long run as the NBA's model franchise, the San Antonio Spurs seemed like they often could flip a switch once the playoffs began. With the way they've looked lately, just getting there might be an issue.

The Spurs (28-16) look to avoid their first four-game losing streak in more than four years on Thursday when they continue their nine-game road trip against the Phoenix Suns, who are looking for their eighth win in nine games.

San Antonio was the third seed in the Western Conference in last year's playoffs, but got the best of the favored Suns in the conference semifinals, winning the series in six games en route to its fourth NBA title in nine seasons.

Things started off well enough for the Spurs in 2007-08, as they opened 17-3 and looked every bit like the defending champions. But since Dec. 11, San Antonio is just 11-13, and has dropped three straight games.

They haven't lost four consecutive games since Nov. 28-Dec. 3, 2003.

"We're not playing good," guard Manu Ginobili said. "The worst part is with the kind of record we have now and the way we're playing, I don't see that we're playing with a sense of urgency. You need to play every game like it's Game 7 of the finals and we're not."

As the Spurs have struggled - they are just 8-11 on the road - Southwest Division rivals Dallas and New Orleans have pulled ahead of the defending champs. Just eight games separate the best team in the Western Conference from the worst, and the Spurs have fallen to the sixth seed.

Injuries have played a part in San Antonio's inconsistency. Ginobili and Tim Duncan have missed time as has Tony Parker, who sat out Tuesday's 88-85 loss at Seattle to rest a bone spur in his left heel.

Parker, averaging 19.2 points and 6.1 assists, won't play in Phoenix and there is no timetable for his return. San Antonio, also missing 3-point specialist Brent Barry (calf), is 1-4 without Parker in the lineup this season.

"They're going to come in wounded and desperate and needing a win and so that's probably when they're the most dangerous," said Suns coach Mike D'Antoni. "We know that at the end of the year they'll be right there with the best teams and you've got to go through them, they're the champs."

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was not about to use Parker's absence as an excuse for the his team's loss Tuesday to the lowly SuperSonics, who ended a 14-game losing streak.

"That's irrelevant. That had nothing to do with it," Popovich said. "Teams lose guys and have nicks all the time. The Sonics played the Spurs and the Sonics won. That's the bottom line."

With Parker missing due to a sprained ankle on Dec. 17, Phoenix (33-13) won 100-95 at San Antonio despite Duncan's 36 points.

It was the Suns' first regular-season win in San Antonio in eight tries, and it came in the teams' first meeting since Phoenix had its season ended by the Spurs in May.

Not that revenge was a motivating factor.

"A win is a win, it doesn't matter if it's the Spurs or any other team," Suns forward Shawn Marion said at the time.

The Suns have won three straight and seven of eight, including a 125-92 rout of Atlanta on Tuesday - their most lopsided victory this season.

Amare Stoudemire has been on a tear for Phoenix, averaging 25.8 points in the last four games while shooting 72.7 percent from the field.

Stoudemire is shooting a career-best 59.5 percent this season, one of the top five marks in the NBA.

I don't look masochistically forward to the game,
NO PLEASURE this mid-season in watching the Spurs.

This mid-season is what ALL SEASON will feel like after Tim is retired.

Thanks to their 125-92 blowout win over the visiting Hawks Tuesday, the Suns extended their season-best consecutive home-winning streak to six games. Amaré Stoudemire led the way with a game-high 24 points on 10-11 shooting from the field, and also collected seven boards and four blocked shots in the victory… With 16 assists in last week’s loss to the Timberwolves, Steve Nash surpassed both Norm Nixon and Stephon Marbury for the 22nd and 21st places, respectively, on the franchise’s all-time assists list. The two-time league MVP is also shooting a career-high and potentially franchise-record 48 percent from three-point range this season (4th in the NBA). To put that in perspective, only 39 players in the entire league are shooting a higher percentage from the field… Two days after his point guard’s latest franchise feat, Shawn Marion surpassed Ring of Honor member Dick Van Arsdale for fourth place on the Suns’ all-time scoring list… The Suns’ win over the Spurs on December 17 snapped a seven-game losing streak at AT&T Center that dated back to March 2003. It also marked the Spurs’ first home loss of the season. Grant Hill led five Suns in double figures with 22 points on the night. The NBA veteran came off the bench in Tuesday’s game for just the seventh time in his career en route to 16 points in the win… When it comes to evening the playing field against their Western Conference foes, Phoenix holds a 44-19 advantage over San Antonio when playing at home.

Like it is almost every night for the defending Pacific Division Champions, it’s anyone’s guess as to who Shawn Marion will find himself matched up against tonight defensively. That versatility, however, is a large reason why the Suns’ forward is such a valuable commodity to the defending Pacific Division Champions. Coming off last week’s road trip that included a game-winning shot in Cleveland and a 15-point, 11-rebound and six-steal effort in Chicago, Phoenix is now hoping a little home cooking will help keep the Matrix going, especially on the defensive end of the floor. Having recorded at least four blocks in seven games this season and averaging a team-best two steals a night, it’s little mystery as to why the Suns yet again find themselves currently atop the Pacific Division standings in 2008.

The Spurs find themselves in a very unfamiliar spot in the Southwest Division – namely in third place. Things didn’t get much better in Seattle Tuesday, as San Antonio fell to the Sonics, 88-85. Manu Ginobili posted a game-high 29 points and seven assists in the loss. Tim Duncan did his best, collecting 27 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. In two weeks, he’ll also make his 10th consecutive All-Star appearance in the annual exhibition… Monday’s loss to Utah also marked the last game for point guard Tony Parker for the foreseeable future. He will be out indefinitely with a bone spur in his heel. The team leader in assists, Parker is the only player in the league to average 19.2 ppg and five assists while shooting better than 49 percent from the field… Michael Finley has scored in double digits in 18 of his last 26 games. His shooting prowess was never more evident this year than his season-high 22 points against Memphis last month… Earlier this month, Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich racked up his 600th career victory, becoming the 20th member of the exclusive club. He was the third fastest coach to surpass 600 wins, accomplishing the feat in 887 games while posting a 68-percent winning percentage… With 480 consecutive games played and started, Bruce Bowen holds the longest active streak in the NBA. It’s been almost six years since he’s missed a contest… With 38.3 ppg, the Spurs’ bench is the best in the league when it comes finding the bottom of the basket.

With the production of All-Star Tim Duncan almost always a given, the difference maker for the Spurs appears to come in the form of their 6-6 guard Manu Ginobili. Currently used as a sparkplug off the bench, the Sixth-Man-of-the-Year candidate quickly transforms San Antonio from a very good team to a nearly unstoppable one. In a victory over the Jazz on December 7, Ginobili contributed a game-high 37 points, to go along with eight rebounds and six assists. He followed up that effort with a 13-point, three-rebound and one-assist effort in a 96-84 loss to Golden State. It appears if teams can find a way to slow down the former second-round selection, the Spurs become a very beatable team. But as teams quickly learn, providing a solid defensive effort against a player who is averaging 19.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists is far easier said than done.
