'SHEED ON THE MAVERICKS: 'They don't have real big men'
February 3, 2008

BY CHRIS SILVA

When discussing the Pistons' 102-86 drubbing at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks last month, Rasheed Wallace didn't mince words.

"We got our (butt) kicked," Wallace said. "Ain't no way to sugarcoat it."

The Mavericks shot an impressive 56.8% from the floor in that game, made 10 of 16 three-pointers and lit it up out of the gate with a 32-point first quarter.

So when the Pistons face Dallas again this afternoon at the Palace, Wallace has an idea on how to combat the Mavs' slash-and-shoot style of play.

"We've just got to put their (butt) in a hole on the other end, put their (butt) right down there on them chop blocks (the post)," Wallace said. "They don't have no real big men, actually. The only real big man I'd say is Damp (Eric Dampier) because he fits that classic big man mold. ... But they've got a lot of slashers on their team. It's a team full of slashers. I'm not saying they're not good, but, hey, in order to hold their slashing down, put their (butt) on the chop blocks."

It's likely that forward Dirk Nowitzki will do his share of scoring. While it's still imperative to contain him, it's the Mavs' other players who can inflict the same damage.

Dallas will have a thin bench without injured point guard Devin Harris, but guard Jason Terry, who primarily has come off the bench this season, can also hold his own.

"They're better with (Harris)," captain Chauncey Billups said. "He's so good at pick and rolls. He's so fast and quick, he can turn the corner giving other guys shots. But you know, Jason Terry, he's just as good as anybody out there. He's a scoring point guard. Good at pick and rolls and you've got to play him."

Billups has so much class.
Sheed doesn't know the meaning of the word.

Let's see if Sheed hustles his lazy ass on the "chop block" to make the Mavs' big man wannabe's and slashers pay.

I don't think Sheed has any intent to "insult" the Mavericks with that comment. He was just telling the truth. He might as well have said the sky is blue.

And we only wish they were a team full of slashers. Maybe one and he's on the shelf right now. I think he meant to say "shooters".

More like trying not to give the Mavs any credit.

I never realized how stupid he is.

Wallace said the Pistons had to take advantage of the undersized Mavericks by going inside, and he did.

The bombastic center scored over Dirk Nowitzki on a fadeaway late in the third quarter as Detroit pulled away, and Wallace had more to say to the Mavericks.

"He can't guard me!" Wallace screamed toward Dallas' bench.

Sheed says that all the time, and in all fairness, not many players in the NBA can guard him. his turnaround on the low block is one hell of a move and it seems like he makes it 99.9% of the time.

That wasn't predictable.

Not at all.

In other words Rasheed is saying the sky is blue. Dirk is a special type of player but he will not be a post player.

Except for a stretch in the 3rd when he hit 2 or 3 in a row, Sheed did not have much success against Dirk in the post. He was really bad in the 1st, missed one from really close too. He got going by hitting 3pointers, so it's not like he was beating Dirk down the block. But not to worry, I think in a possible finals matchup Dirk will be on Dice, and Damp or most likely Diop on Rasheed.
