A jury of 9 members has selected yesterday in Madrid "the 50 most influential contributors to European Club Basketball over the last half-century". These 50 contributors are 35 players, 10 coaches and 5 referees.

Manu Ginobili has been selected as one of the 35 greatest "euro" players. What is amazing is that Manu has only stayed 4 years in Europe including 2 years with a bad/average team.
Congrats to Manu. :clap

Experts decide European Club Basketball's 50 greatest contributors

The 50 most influential personalities to European Club Basketball over the last half-century were chosen at a meeting on February 3, 2008 in Madrid, Spain by the Euroleague Basketball Experts Committee headed by Mr. Boris Stankovic, the FIBA Secretary General Emeritus and one of the founders of the continental competitions that began in the 1957-58 season. Joining Mr. Stankovic as committee vice-president was ULEB president Eduard Portela. Former playing and coaching legends, a club director, a referee and a media member made up the rest of the panel. The former players are two of the most-crowned champions in European club history, Mr. Sergey Belov of Russia and Mr. Dino Meneghin of Italy. The coaches were former Euroleague winners Mr. Lolo Sainz of Spain and Mr. Dan Peterson of the United States. The club director was Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv's president of almost four decades, Mr. Shimon Mizrahi. Representing game officials was Euroleague Basketball refereeing director Costas Rigas. The media representative was Mr. Jean-Luc Thomas of L'Equipe, the French daily newspaper that proposed the start of continental club competitions in 1957. Mr. Belov was unable to attend the meeting due to prior commitments, but had previously communicated his opinions to the committee. The list of the most influential contributors was made up of 35 players, 10 coaches and 5 referees from among a list of candidates and write-in nominees proposed by fans and committee members themselves. The 50 most influential contributors to European Club Basketball over the last half-century will be honored at season-ending ceremonies to coincide with the Final Four in Madrid from May 2 to 4.

There are plenty of players that contrubute much more to EU baket than Manu. I dont want to say he didn't deserve it, but i'm watching Euroleague now for 20 years and i saw some players that contributed much more.

Here is only one of them:MATJAŽ SMODIŠ
-won the 2001 Euroleague with Virtus Bologna
-won the 2006 Euroleague with CSKA
-played in 3 more Euroleague finals
-named to the 2006-07 All-Euroleague Second Team
-named the 2006-07 Euroleague February MVP
-won the 1999-00 Slovenian National Championship with KK Krka Novo Mesto
-won the 2000-01 Italian National Championship with Virtus Bologna
-won the 2004-05 Italian National Championship with Fortitudo Bologna
-won the 2005-06 and 2006-07 Russian National Championship with CSKA Moscow

He is one of the best players in Europe in last 10 years.

diego, you are from Europe or America? This is funny. What he won? He played Euroleague 2 years, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002:). So in 2 years he won more than Smodiš didn't in all career? You are ridicolus man. And read one more time. HE WON 2 titles and played in 5 finals.......
In Europe he's still doctor for Manu...

Manu, yes he achieve a lot in NBA and he's one of my favourite players but don't talk to me what Smodiš did or did not achieve

Mike D'Antoni was a great player in Italy before being a coach.

Mike D'Antoni (1969-90)
Teams: Marshall University (USA), Kansas City Kings (USA), St. Louis Spirits (USA), San Antonio Spurs (USA), Olimpia Milano (ITA)
Summary: A charismatic playmaker with great court vision and leadership, D'Antoni was the floor general who guided Milano's back-to-back Euroleague titles in 1987 and 1988. D'Antoni arrived in Milano in the late 1970s and helped the team win five Italian League titles as well as a Korac Cup trophy. A steals specialist and a natural-born leader, D'Antoni started his impressing coaching career in Milano before moving to Benetton Treviso, whom he took to the 2002 Euroleague Final Four. D'Antoni is a successful NBA coach nowadays with the Phoenix Suns and remains a legend of European basketball.

Matjaz Smodis (1994-Present)
Teams: Krka Novo Mesto (SLO), Virtus Bologna (ITA), Fortitudo Bologna (ITA), CSKA Moscow (RUS)
Summary: A modern power forward with solid post skills and unlimited range, Matjaz Smodis remains the silent leader at Euroleague powerhouse CSKA Moscow. Smodis already surprised Slovenian basketball by leading Krka Novo Mesto to the 2000 league title against perennial champion Union Olimpija. He then joined Kinder Bologna, winning the 2001 Euroleague title and reaching the 2002 title game. Another Euroleague title with CSKA in 2006 and finals with Fortitudo in 2004 and CSKA in 2007 show that Smodis is always ready to take his team to bigger heights.

I was wondering about Szczerbiak. Interesting. As expected, lots of Serbs on that list. The NBA well known names like Divac and Drazen, plus Croats like Kukoc and Radja. Sabonis might be the best ever from what I've read and heard. Bodiroga was supposed to be a superstar there for a long time as well.

I wonder how much that list was influenced by success of players elsewhere, since as has been said, Manu only played four years there and two years were average teams. And, technically, being from Argentina, he's not European.

i guess they're chilean too? somids has won 2 of 5 euroleague finals, a february mvp and a all-second team. manu is 1 of 2 in euroleague finals, a euroleague finals mvp (you know, when he was chosen over smodis), back to back italian league mvp, olympics mvp, ideal 5 02 WC, ideal 5 04 olympics, ideal 5 06 WC...

yeah, smodis has a much better non-nba resume, that february mvp is really impressive!

Scola's career in Europe is like Marion's career in NBA : great regular season player but no trophy and not that great during playoffs.
Ginobili's career in Europe is like Wade's career in NBA : short career but he leads his team to a trophy.

Who has been, so far, the most influential player ? Shawn Marion or Dwayne Wade ?

Neither is Bob McAdoo. Or Manu Ginobili. Or Anthony Parker. Or Mike D'Antoni.

At least 14% of the list is made up of players who were great while playing for European teams but weren't born in European nations.

This is the list of players with biggest influence on EUROPEAN BASKETBALL.
Tony and Dirk didn't do nothing in Europe, because they came to NBA young, and they never played any EUROLEAGUE bball.

If you don't participate, you can't have a lot of influence. Duuuuuuuhhhhhhh!
